Job Description:

Position Title: Outreach Librarian

Appointment: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, tenured / tenure track, full-time, 12-month

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Dean of Library Affairs, the Outreach Librarian plays a key role in supporting student success by leading outreach efforts, coordinating library representation at student events, facilitating communication between Morris Library and the wider campus community, developing productive relationships with faculty and support unit personnel, and building connections with those who no longer need to visit the building in order to benefit from library services, as well as local and regional stakeholders.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is a nationally ranked public research university with a population of over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Morris Library holds over three million volumes and subscribes to a wide range of electronic resources and databases. The library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), and the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI). Librarians at SIUC are faculty and are covered by collective bargaining.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Act as an ambassador for Morris Library to the SIU Carbondale campus and surrounding community in person and via appropriate electronic means.
  • Lead library outreach efforts by developing strategies, projects, and materials to promote engagement with Morris Library resources and services while enhancing perceptions of the library.
  • Develop library orientation sessions and provide tours to targeted individuals and groups.
  • Develop relationships with regional high schools to bring students on campus and into the library.
  • Support the library's information literacy program, through teaching, assessment, and developing instructional materials.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to support SIU Carbondale's recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Coordinate Morris Library's presence at campus events.
  • Lead outreach efforts by identifying opportunities and developing strategies to enhance perceptions and use of library spaces, resources, services, and programs.
  • Conduct scholarly research/creative activity as part of the position, promotion, and tenure process.
  • Engage in professional activities, including university and library committees and task forces.

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Master's of Library Science degree or equivalent, awarded by date of appointment.
  • For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: minimum two (2) years of professional experience at an academic library.
  • For appointment at the Associate Professor rank: minimum of six (6) years of experience at an academic library.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, students, and staff to support and promote teaching, learning, and research initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Evidence of successful program development, budgeting, and marketing.
  • Potential to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion and tenure, including professional service and published research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching credit-bearing courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to reaching and serving diverse user populations.
  • Supervisory experience of student employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with upper administration, representing the library in Campus-Wide initiatives.
