Position
Summary
Under the supervision of the Engineering
Supervisor, Engineering Manager, and Engineering Director. Associate Engineer is
responsible for developing designs, plans, and cost estimates associated with
distribution system additions, replacements, and retirements. The Associate
Engineer is expected to implement safety considerations in design and ensure
compliance to safety standards and SJW policy in the field.
Specific
Responsibilities
The incumbent is relied upon to perform various tasks such as linear infrastructure designs associated with water mains, as well as infrastructure designs within stations
Provide sound engineering decisions related to the design, construction, and retirement of distribution system assets and systems.
Requires interdisciplinary teamwork involving contractors, consultants, and other personnel within and outside the Company
Designs potable water, raw water, and recycled water main extensions, replacements, and retirements
Uses AutoCAD software and GIS programs for projects plans and exhibits; prepares detailed construction cost estimates
Reviews design-build plans for compliance with regulations and standards
Prepares, submits, and secures permits
Provides technical evaluations of project plans developed by outside agencies, contractors, consultants, and internal technicians and engineers
Improves safety by implementing engineering controls in design
Assists in the training and mentoring of staff
Prepares construction bid documents and addenda
Assists in the updating of standard drawings and specifications
Observes field project sites and coordinates construction of proposed projects with the Construction Group and Operations Department
Performs special projects as directed.
Required
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Technical knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering
General knowledge of applicable regulatory codes, standards, and methods governing the design, construction, and operation of investor owned water utilities
Working knowledge with computer-aided design software
Strong written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
Required
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree (from an accredited school) or equivalent in Civil Engineering or an approved related field
Position requires California State Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer
A minimum of two years of Professional Engineering work experience related to water or wastewater systems and facilities.
A Master's Degree in Engineering, Business, or Public Administration is desirable.

driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
