Overview

The Program Manager for Trenton Arts at Princeton (TAP) oversees all aspects of the TAP program. Working closely with an advisory group comprised of leadership from Community and Regional Affairs, the Department of Music, Lewis Center for the Arts, and Pace Center for Civic Engagement, the TAP Program Manager provides strategic vision and operational oversight for the program including but not limited to artistic direction, fiscal responsibility, mission-centric programming, and collaboration across departments.  

 

The Program Manager is responsible for building and sustaining relationships with partners in Trenton, focused primarily on Trenton Central High School. The Program Manager works closely with teachers and leadership in the Trenton Public School District to develop and align programs which complement and support the pedagogical objectives of the faculty in Trenton. The Program Manager is required to operate the program in full compliance with the University’s policies regarding working with minors, checking in regularly with Risk Management and Office of General Counsel among other departments as necessary. 

 

The Program Manager is responsible for increasing the visibility of the program both on Princeton campus and in the Trenton community through communications and engagement initiatives, and is responsible for developing, implementing and assessing all public-facing activities of the program. 

 

Due to the nature of the work and the Saturday Morning Arts program in particular, the hours required of the Program Manager fall outside of “traditional” working hours, and include many Saturdays, evenings, and weekends during the school year. 

 

The Program Manager currently oversees 1 full time administrative staff member, 4 part-time staff, 6 student workers, and 50+ student volunteers each year. 

 

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, 2-year term position.



Responsibilities

  • Oversee Saturday Morning Arts program, consisting of Trenton Youth Dancers, Orchestra, Singers, and Theater.

Specific responsibilities include:

-Set the strategic vision and programming for the TAP Saturday Morning Arts program in consultation with key internal and external stakeholders 

-Develop, oversee, and implement annual operating budget for the program including personnel and non-personnel budgets

-Manage multiple priorities for the program aligning program goals with University mission. 

-Organize all aspects of weekly rehearsals, performances, and field trips, including transportation, food, production needs, equipment, and guest artists.

-Serve as the main point of contact for Trenton students and their families.

-Recruit, train, and supervise Princeton student volunteers.

-Work closely with Trenton teacher partners to recruit new students and ensure that our programming is aligned with and supports their school curriculum.

 

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the teachers, administrators, students, families, and communities in the Trenton Public School District in order to understand their values, priorities and goals, and to steer the resources of TAP to support and complement the work that they are doing in Trenton.

 

  • Develop, implement, and assess multiple collaborative projects, programs, and initiatives with campus partners, aligning identified need and/or interest from the Trenton partners with University resources and priorities. 

Sample projects may include:

-The Neighborhood Music Project, a collaboration with Princeton University Concerts whereby select PUC artists visit Trenton to engage with public school students. Past and future artists include conductor Gustavo Dudamel, dancer Caleb Teicher, and cellist Sheku and pianist Isata-Kanneh Mason.

-Tigers in Trenton, a collaboration with ODUS which culminates in an annual showcase of Princeton student talent for the Trenton community at Trenton Central High School.

-Instrument Drive, a collaboration with the Office of Community and Regional Affairs whereby instrument donations from the Princeton community are distributed to Trenton students.

 

  • Manage all operational and financial aspects of the Program, ensuring that resources are prioritized both strategically and efficiently, and that programmatic aspirations align with fiscal realities. Manage all communications and public-facing aspects of the program. Manage all aspects of the program's operations including scheduling, production and technology needs, and all communications channels, including social media accounts and website. 

Specific responsibilities include:

-Supervise one full-time administrative staff member 

-Supervise hiring and payment of part-time staff, student workers, and guest artists.

-Responsible for the development and execution of an annual budget.

-Supervise two student correspondents who are responsible for the creation of original website and social media content.

-Oversee the Trenton Arts Fellows, a group of Princeton undergraduates who serve as Saturday Morning Arts student leaders.

 

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key University stakeholders to create a sustainable pathway for more access to the arts and higher education for students from underrepresented communities. Work closely with the University’s Community and Regional Affairs department to stay in touch with the University’s efforts in Trenton, and to keep them informed of TAP’s activities and planning in Trenton. Represent the arts within community engagement at Princeton when appropriate. Manage large group of stakeholders with potentially differing priorities to diplomatically and strategically cultivate interest in TAP’s programs and initiatives among its many constituents. 

 



Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required and three years experience. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build relationships and work closely with faculty, students, and staff
  • Demonstrated experience working and building relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Proven track record for leading, managing, or developing programs in underrepresented communities which serve the needs and priorities of everyone involved
  • Strong arts background
  • Ability to work independently and simultaneously on multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Ability to work outside of traditional work hours, including evenings, weekends, and most Saturdays during the academic year
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and creative problem-solving
  • Demonstrated exceptional decision-making skills while maintaining confidentiality and/or discretion as appropriate when collaborating with a wide range of individuals from diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic environment
  • Demonstrated interest in working closely with faculty and students
