This position supports the podiatry and chiropractic segment of our medical professional liability line of business and can be fully remote, preferably in the Eastern or Central time zones.


The Senior Associate Underwriter ("SAU") will assist and support their underwriter(s) in providing exceptional customer services levels for policyholders, agents/producers, and internal customers, including educating agency staff on our submission requirements, risk appetite, and compliance with state and patient compensation fund deadlines. Under general supervision, assess risk by working closely with the underwriting, policy services, claims, sales and marketing, and regulatory departments. The SAU interacts with internal and external customers and plays a key role in ensuring that production and strategic goals are met and exceeded. The SAU handle policy processing for new business, renewals, and ongoing account maintenance. The expectation is that the SAU perform their duties in accordance with established customer service standards and do so within the framework of the rules, rates, and coverage forms filed and approved by law in the state of responsibility and within their SAU Letter of Authority. The SAU is also responsible for special projects assigned by the Underwriting Supervisor.



What you'll do:



50% - Support the development, growth, and maintenance of an assigned book of business working directly with the UW team.


  • Send monthly renewal offers.

  • Works proactively with underwriter(s) in support of our new and renewal client base.

  • Responsible for providing the highest level of accuracy and support to the underwriter(s) throughout the new business lifecycle and ongoing renewal and mid-term account maintenance.

  • Provide exceptional customer service by processing policy issuance, underwriting midterm service requests within authority and premium finance notifications and patient compensation fund ("PCF") transactions within established times.

  • Performs initial underwriting review, triage, and processing of new and renewal submissions within the assigned SUA letter of authority, for direct and agency/broker accounts or refer to underwriter regarding classification and pricing based on insurability and profitability, with your recommendation and rationale for approval.

  • Analyze year over year risk profile and loss history information and take necessary steps to ensure that each risk is appropriately classified and priced.

  • Analyze and appropriately process policy endorsement requests from insureds and agents within authority or refer to underwriter(s) with your recommendation and rationale for approval.

  • Handle with minimal guidance accounts with a higher level of complexity.

30% - Maintain and develop strong technical skills including both product and system knowledge.


  • Demonstrate expert system skills (e.g., eoasis/core eoasis, OnBase, Image Right, etc.).

  • Attend team, department, and cross functional team meetings. Participate in discussions or education sessions with other teams or departments as needed. Review underwriting reports and reviews as requested by management. Manage broker changes and mass roll over of broker book of business.

  • Work with IT and/or Business Analyst to troubleshoot, coordinate and communicate system problems.

  • Serve as primary tester representing Underwriting interests within system upgrades, new releases, etc.

  • Monitor and pull reports, upon request from your manager, and as trained.

  • Assist with mentoring and developing the competency and growth of the Associate Underwriting staff.

  • Participate in learning and development opportunities online, in person and group training sessions as needed. Outside Institutes and RPLU courses encouraged.

  • Familiarity with internal insurance company operations and ability to coordinate/answer billing questions, PCF research and questions, claims questions, IT questions.

  • Ability to recognize and recommend changes in processes and workflows to obtain operational efficiencies.

10% - Support Underwriting efforts to develop, cultivate and strengthen relationships with our Agency/Broker partners.


  • Maintains highest level of customer service and produces accurate work with minimal mistakes.

  • Understand and achieve productivity requirements to meet Underwriting objectives.

  • Responds in a timely and professional manner to internal processing requests and external queries received from our brokers.

  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency and consistently meet processing deadlines per Underwriting service standards.

  • Work on ad hoc special projects as directed by management.

5% - Maintain strong relationships internally to support Underwriting team efforts as well as cross departmental and cross office.


  • Assist in the mentoring and development of the Associate Underwriter team to improve underwriting skills, technical knowledge, and risk analysis.

  • Work in partnership with Underwriting and Policy Services leadership and staff to foster efficiencies.

  • Service to our agents and insured's ensuring the highest level of precision.

  • Maintain an organized approach to managing the multiple tasks of a high volume.

  • Plan for peak workload times.

  • Participate in assigned projects and departmental efforts as an active and positive team member.

  • Clear, constructive communication with other team members to address needs and concerns.

  • Collaborates effectively with the Customer Experience and Policy Services and Sales, as necessary.

5% - Other duties/responsibilities as directed by management.



What we're looking for:



  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field. Or High school diploma and a minimum of eight years' relevant professional experience in lieu of degree.

  • Minimum of four years' experience in an insurance environment (agency, claims, underwriting) with one year of professional liability underwriting experience, preferably at ProAssurance, is required.

  • Resident P&C insurance agents license may be required (can be obtained within one year from employment start date).

  • Must have strong attention to detail with accuracy and minimal errors.

  • Critical thinking, active listening, and time management skills are essential.

  • Dependable and detail oriented with demonstrated ability to self-direct and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a high volume, fast paced environment.

  • Self-motivated and able to prioritize and handle significant workflow and account volume while accomplishing multiple tasks in a timely manner.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Outlook, Word, and Excel. Advanced Skill Level in Microsoft Excel preferred, including formula-writing and proficiency in pivot tables.

  • High level of knowledge related to Company specific systems such as OASIS, OnBase, Image Right, etc.

  • Ability to work in dynamic, rapidly changing environment; adapting to changing requirements and collaborating with a wide range of colleagues to quickly deliver solutions.

  • Takes initiative on projects and assignments, seeks alternate solutions when necessary.

  • Highly motivated and results oriented.

  • Strong analytical skills required.
