JOB SUMMARY

The adjunct instructor of Music Theory will teach music theory and aural skills courses for all music majors and minors, along with compositional applied lessons for majors equal up to 6 credit hours.


The adjunct instructor reports to the Chair of the music department and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences and is responsible for supporting and advancing the mission and goals of the university, college, and department in all academic, scholarly, and student support activities.



DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe ideal candidate has experience with music theory pedagogy that includes various music genres, styles, and the use of digital technologies.


Essential Duties Summary:



  • Plan weekly lessons based on learning outcomes for each course

  • Implement weekly lesson plans using a variety of research-based instructional strategies and student engagement techniques

  • Evaluate student learning through informal and formal assessment practices

  • Provide ongoing feedback to students through grading of tasks and assessments and responding to students via email promptly

  • Facilitate collaborative learning opportunities for all students in the course

  • Adapt learning materials each semester to address student needs and interest

  • Contribute to revising the music theory curriculum for undergraduate music degree, including suggestions for new courses

  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure an intra-disciplinary approach to music making and learning,

  • Attend required training and/or meetings related to teaching and learning or administrative responsibilities

  • Be available for students during weekly office hours equal to 2 hours for every three credit hours taught

  • Perform other tasks related to teaching in the music department

Hiring Range:

Commensurate with experience.


Education:



  • Master's degree in music theory, composition, or related field of music

  • ABD or terminal degree in music theory or its equivalent preferred


Required Licensing/Certification:

N/A


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Knowledge of


  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications (i.e., Outlook, Word, etc.)

  • Online platforms utilized to support teaching of specialized content.

  • Accommodating students at varied academic levels within one learning environment

  • Differentiating instruction for students at varied academic levels

  • Problem-solving and decision-making

  • Time management

  • Verbal and written communication




Ability to

  • Submit required documents and reports by stated deadlines, including attendance and grades

  • Make sound independent decisions within the context of the departmental, community, and university environments.




Work Experience:



  • Experience teaching at the post-secondary level

  • Evidence of inclusive approaches to music theory pedagogy preferred


Working/Environmental Conditions:



  • Prolonged standing, sitting, and/or walking

  • Handling light weight objects.

  • Using or carrying equipment
