Position Location: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC, office with the option of two days of remote work each week.

Please Note: This position is included in the staff bargaining unit, Brookings United, affiliated with the IFPTE Local 70 union, and is covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.



Responsibilities

The Digital Marketing Manager is a strategic thinker and analytical expert who will help transform how we reach and influence policy decision-makers across digital channels. This role will combine digital marketing, including email and social media, audience research and digital analytics to ensure our digital presence effectively engages policymakers and government officials at all levels as well as other key decision-makers across sectors.

Email and Digital Marketing (30%)

  • Work with the Director of Digital Marketing to develop and execute a comprehensive and cutting-edge email marketing strategy for Brookings, including providing strategic advice and editing to research programs.

  • Manage Brookings’s email subscriber database and serves as the main point of contact for our email vendor (Hubspot), overseeing system maintenance, rollout of new features and tools, and opportunities for improvement. Manage the Institution’s calendar for newsletter sends.

  • Conduct research and provide insights and recommendations to guide content strategy and distribution for communications products and initiatives across the Institution.

  • Manage several online advertising campaigns a year, including drafting ad copy, setting up social media ads, and analyzing and reporting results to research program staff.

  • Lead trainings for staff, scholars, and interns on use of email platform tools, contact database, and email analytics as well as best practices.

Social Media Management (30%)

  • Works with the Director of Digital Marketing to contribute to a cutting-edge communications strategy across social media platforms that effectively engages target audiences.

  • Manages Brookings’s primary social media accounts, including brand monitoring, posting/scheduling content, community management, metrics analysis, and account strategy.

  • Coordinates with colleagues across Central Communications and the research programs to manage and/or contribute social media content, including multimedia content.

  • Provides social media trainings, account audits, and ongoing guidance for scholars, research assistants, and program communications staff.

  • Acts as department expert on social media trends and platforms, and proposes new features, tools, and tactics to amplify scholars’ voices online.

Analytics and Performance Measurement (30%)

  • Support initiatives to deeply understand how policy decision-makers consume and engage with digital, multimedia, and other content.

  • Monitor trends and patterns across owned platforms to identify content and engagement opportunities. Analyze performance across digital channels to identify what drives meaningful engagement.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across Central Comms and within the programs to create a fulsome understanding of our audiences, their needs, and how they engage with our work across Brookings digital platforms.

  • Generate regular reports and insights for leadership on audience engagement and content performance, supporting optimization efforts across channels based on data insights.

  • Oversee analytics reporting for research programs email newsletters and social media.

Strategic Communications and Internal Management (10%)

  • Represent the communications team on cross-program committees, Institutional task forces, and research program meetings.

  • Contribute to analysis and evaluation of digital marketing tools, making recommendations to leadership.

  • Contribute writing and editing, as well as technical support, to newsletters, social media, and other content, in coordination with communications colleagues.

  • Support project management and collaboration across the Central Communications team and across the Institution.

  • Actively contribute to internal team and/or organizational work that shapes our systems and our culture.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

A minimum of four years of experience in digital communications, digital marketing, or related field. Strong analytical skills with experience in social media analytics, email metrics, and digital advertising data. Experience with digital audience research and segmentation as well as social media and email marketing management for an organization. Understanding of policy communications landscape required. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

Experience in policy communications or think tank environment and an understanding of how to reach and influence policy audiences. Track record of using data to guide strategic communications decisions. Strong presentation and data visualization skills. Experience with audience research methodologies. Familiarity with content management systems, email marketing tools, and social media marketing tools required. Experience with analytics platforms (Google Analytics, social analytics, etc.). Working HTML knowledge, preferably in an email marketing environment. Adept at learning new applications. Excellent critical thinking and ability to translate data into actionable insights. Strong project management and cross-team collaboration skills. Excellent organizational, communication, writing and proofreading skills. Ability to prioritize, work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgement, self-starter.
