Piping SME / Senior Piping Support Engineer

Wilson, NC (reporting to Cary, NC for first 2-3 months)

Contract through Dec 2027

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Piping Design Support Engineer with over 15 years of experience in overseeing the design, installation, testing, and maintenance of Piping Systems on construction projects. This role leads collaboration with our EPCM prime contractor representative (Work Package Owner) to ensure scope designs are implemented safely, functionally, and compliantly. Responsibilities include reviewing Engineering and Project documents (P&IDs, specifications, procedures, scope), bids, and driving subcontractor engagement throughout the design and installation phases.

The role supports the EPCM WPO in submittal and RFIs administration, procurement, value engineering, and construction, including multi-trade coordination, performance tracking, means and method deviation approvals, and change request reviews. Furthermore, this position involves system walkdowns, construction test pack reviews, and support for turnover, shakedown, and system startup as necessary. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in equipment layout and design of piping systems (process and utility), with a strong background in the Bio/Pharmaceutical field. The Piping Design Lead will be responsible for overseeing the design and coordination of piping systems, ensuring completeness and compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design and layout of process and utility piping systems using 3D modeling software based on expert knowledge in ASME Bioprocessing Equipment (BPE) and ASME 31.3
  • Review and approve piping specifications and P&IDs for projects.
  • Act as main point of contact for design reviews for the engineering group; act as SME for piping system construction
  • Coordinate with various design areas to ensure seamless integration of piping systems.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of equipment modules for accessibility and completeness
  • Oversee the creation and review of flushing plans for hygienic systems.
  • Manage third-party inspections and ensure compliance with ASME 31.3 piping codes.
  • Provide expertise and support during the construction phase, including walk-downs and quality checks.
  • For system completion design integrity and operability.
  • Assist in estimating and reviewing project costs and timelines.
  • Review and approve constructions means and methods deviated.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 20 years of experience in piping design
  • Large scale project experience within the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Proficiency in Intergraph PDS, AutoCAD, AutoCAD P3D, MicroStation, Revit, and Navisworks.
  • Strong understanding of ASME BPE and 31.3 piping codes and industry standards as it pertains to test backs and walk downs; will have responsibility over these in construction
  • Experience creating flushing procedures and diagrams nice to have; this job would not include those functions but would be a part of the review team
  • Ability to work onsite initially in Wilson, NC
