Description The School of Extended Learning (SXL) at Governors State University serves as the continuing education and workforce development center for the University. Educational programs include short-term training that prepares individuals to enter the workforce, professional development and continuing education for individuals to advance in their profession, and English learning assistance for students and local residents. SXL programs also include a camp for middle and high schoolers, a testing center for academic and professional certification, mentor programs for educators, and the Knowledge Exchange for retirees, and semi-retirees. SXL works with local and regional businesses to identify gaps and provide customized workable training solutions. Essential Responsibilities What skills or experiences will interns gain from this position? See below! Leadership and Teamwork Skills: Gain experience in leading groups of students, fostering teamwork, and encouraging collaboration during 2 camp activities. Develop the ability to work closely with GovState faculty, alumni, and community volunteers to create a supportive camp environment. Summer Camp Education and Curriculum Support: Enhance knowledge in camp activities through hands-on activities and exposure to different topics. Learn curriculum planning and implementation, assisting with activity design and content delivery in a real-world educational setting. Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Practice effective communication, including giving clear instructions, facilitating group discussions, and fostering a positive environment for learning. Build interpersonal skills by engaging with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities, fostering inclusivity, and supporting individual learning needs. Behavioral Management and Mentorship: Gain experience in managing group dynamics, providing behavioral support, and maintaining a safe, positive learning atmosphere. Learn mentorship techniques by guiding and supporting students aged 10- 16, fostering curiosity and encouraging their growth. Required and Preferred Qualifications Knowledge: Foundational knowledge in camp topics to support and enrich camp activities. Understanding of youth learning principles, especially in hands-on and experiential learning settings. Basic knowledge of techniques for managing group dynamics and supporting positive behavior in young learners. Familiarity with child safety protocols, including CPR/AED training for infants, children, and adults. Skills: Ability to lead groups, facilitate learning, and inspire excitement in campers during camp activities. Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey concepts effectively and clearly. Ability to think on your feet and use creative strategies to solve issues that may arise during activities or field trips. Capacity for planning, coordinating, and maintaining accurate records and schedules to ensure smooth operations. Proficiency in using content creation software (e.g., Canva, Google Slides, or similar) to support the development of activity materials and presentations.
