Position Overview
The National Medical Director, Occupational Health will lead the strategic enhancement of core occupational health services to drive outcomes-focused performance and ensure best-in-class injury management, regulatory compliance, and workforce health strategies. This role is responsible for optimizing clinical quality, efficiency, and employer value within occupational health.
Additional focus will be on integrating occupational health with advanced primary care, behavioral health, and musculoskeletal services to support whole-worker well-being.
The ideal candidate is an experienced clinician and clinical leader (physician or advanced practice provider) with a strong background in occupational health, and secondary expertise in population health and care model development. This role requires a balance of strategic vision, operational excellence, and clinical expertise to drive best practices across Marathon Health's network of employer-sponsored clinics. Clinical experience in occupational medicine is a must, with additional experience in primary care medicine preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Occupational Health Strategy & Outcomes Optimization
Develop and execute a national strategy to enhance core occupational health services with an outcomes-driven approach.
Lead clinical standardization and quality improvement initiatives to optimize workplace injury care, regulatory compliance, case management efficiency.
Partner with internal stakeholders (Operations, Clinical Leadership, IT/Analytics, Product) to align occupational health services with employer health and safety objectives.
Develop innovative injury prevention and early intervention programs to support employer goals to improve safety and lower injury rates.
Clinical Oversight & Best Practices
Provide clinical leadership and oversight to ensure high-quality, consistent delivery of occupational health services across all sites.
Define and implement best-in-class protocols for workplace injury management, return-to-work programs, worksite risk assessment, and regulatory compliance.
Serve as the primary clinical advisor on occupational health-related matters, including OSHA, NIOSH, ADA, DOT, and workers' compensation requirements.
Drive Clinical Integration with Marathon Health's Other Services
Leverage advanced primary care, behavioral health, health coaching and musculoskeletal services to enhance workforce well-being and injury prevention.
Drive holistic worker health initiatives by integrating safety, well-being, and chronic disease prevention into employer health strategies.
Business & Employer Engagement
Act as a clinical consultant for employers to optimize their occupational health programs and reduce healthcare costs.
Collaborate with Sales and employer relations teams to develop and present solutions that demonstrate Marathon Health's value in workforce health management.
Represent Marathon Health in industry forums, conferences, and employer advisory groups on occupational and workforce health trends.
Leadership & Team Development
Provide clinical mentorship to medical directors, advanced practice providers, and health coaches across the organization.
Lead continuous education and training efforts to enhance competency in occupational health principles across Marathon Health's clinical teams.
Foster a culture of collaborative care and innovation within the medical leadership team.
Qualifications & Experience
MD, DO, NP or PA with active, unrestricted medical license. Board certification in Occupational Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Preventive Medicine preferred.
10+ years of clinical experience with at least 5 years in a leadership role overseeing occupational health or employer-based primary care.
Strong expertise in worksite health programs, occupational injury management, regulatory compliance, and population health.
Demonstrated success in driving occupational health outcomes and optimizing clinical performance.
Experience engaging with large employers, unions, and industry stakeholders on workforce health and safety initiatives.
Excellent leadership, communication, and change management skills.
