The City of Sedro-Woolley is looking Yard Waste Attendants. These positions are represented by the AFSCME union.

Salary: $24.67 per hour to start

CLASS TITLE: RECYCLING AND YARD WASTE ATTENDANT

DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS

GENERAL PURPOSE:
This position is an integral part of the team providing the City of Sedro-Woolley with an efficient and safe Solid Waste & Recycling Department. Operates a variety of equipment utilized in Solid Waste and site recycling services.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the supervision of the Solid Waste, Fleet Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None generally. May supervise temporary staff as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts a morning inspection of tire air pressures, hydraulic pressure, air tanks, hydraulic fluids, transmission fluids, power steering, lights, and other critical parts of yard waste drop off equipment prior to the execution of the daily tasks. Refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.

Unlocks and locks gates and city buildings.

Assists citizens with unloading their yard waste and recycling into the proper areas.

Punches yard waste cards per rate schedule. Sells punch cards as necessary. Goes to City Hall and picks up punch cards and turns the money into City Hall. Takes money collection box to City hall on a regular basis.

Responds to complaints; resolves complaints within scope of authority; refer complaint or explains actions to Supervisor.

Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.

Keeps records of work completed, and other required records.

Runs screening plant

Collects and disposes of garbage, recycling and food waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.

Efficiently loads containers for transport

Will measure and check all recycling, yard waste containers to determine how full they are and whether they need service, will prep the containers for hauling.

Will haul small full containers to recycling centers as designated by supervisor

Haul propane tanks to recycling center.

Will package light bulbs and inform supervisor of how many to ship.

Will stack and haul tires as needed to recycling facility

Will palletize TVs and electronics as needed

Will call in for services needed for our facility such as battery recycling, refrigerator pumping and used oil.

Performs related department duties as assigned.

OTHER RELATED JOB TASKS:
May assemble carts, clean carts, wash trucks or any equipment as assigned.

Performs delivery of residential wheeled carts and performs cleaning and repairs to containers and carts. Assists with special projects. Answers and refer complaints from the citizens.

Janitorial duties as assigned.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

Maintains ability to be reached by City to greatest extent practicable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

(B) Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to observe proper safety precautions; Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor and the public; Ability to perform manual tasks under varying weather conditions.

(B) Must be able to adhere to a strict time schedule, be punctual and a self-starter.

(C) Ability to work independently.

Licenses Required:
(A) Valid Washington State Driver's license.
(B) First Aid card within 1 year

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Front end loader/ backhoe, screening machine and pickup trucks. Common hand and power tools such as rake, loppers, pitch fork, wrenches, mobile or portable radio.

Office equipment, including personal computer with word processing and other software, and any other that may be necessary to performance of duties.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Much of the work is done in roadways with exposure to traffic hazards. Work is performed in both daylight and darkness.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud in field settings, and moderately quiet in office settings.
