Senior Mechanical Construction Scheduler & Claims Avoidance Specialist
Are you a dedicated construction scheduling professional that is looking to advance their career with Helm? We are looking for an innovative scheduling professional to establish and lead a new Scheduling & Claims Mitigation Department. This role demands expertise in critical path method (CPM) scheduling, mechanical system installation sequences, and proactive schedule risk analysis to minimize disputes. The successful candidate will initially provide centralized scheduling support across multiple large projects while developing protocols to prevent claims through schedule integrity - ultimately building a team to serve 80% of our $200M+ annual project portfolio.
This position will initially be housed in our national mechanical division which is responsible for the HVAC, Plumbing, and Piping scopes of work for new construction projects as well as remodel work in buildings such as mission critical facilities, hospitals and associated healthcare buildings, high-rise buildings, athletic stadiums, and other commercial building types located throughout the Midwest. This role will be based in our Westmont, IL office.
Skills / Responsibilities:
Critical path schedule development and maintenance - using Primavera P6 scheduling software you will create resource-loaded critical path method (CPM) schedules for complex mechanical projects including HVAC, process piping, and industrial systems which includes:
Conducting constructability reviews of mechanical sequences with Foremen and engineers to validate activity durations
Analyzing schedules provided to us by clients and/or General Contractors for viability of sequencing operations in the goal of identifying errors and bottlenecks
Modeling parallel workstreams for sheet metal, plumbing, and equipment installation while respecting union jurisdictional boundaries
Integrating procurement timelines for specialty valves, chillers, and other equipment into the P6 schedule
Integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows as well as prefabrication processes into the P6 schedule
Developing standardized WBS templates for mechanical projects
Establishing earned value metrics to track piping spool installation rates against labor hours
Claims avoidance through schedule analysis - you will implement proactive measures to prevent disputes by:
Performing weekly schedule variance analyses comparing planned vs. actual mechanical completion percentages
Documenting root causes of delays using time impact analysis (TIA) methodologies for RFI responses and change orders
Maintaining a risk register tracking latent conditions like delayed equipment deliveries or design conflicts in mechanical rooms
Conducting monthly schedule audits to ensure compliance with ASTM E2691-22 Standards for construction schedules
Implement schedule risk assessment toolkits using Monte Carlo simulations
Cross functional collaboration - serve as a scheduling liaison between:
Project Managers to align mechanical milestones with other trades
VDC Managers to align required BIM work on projects
Prefabrication shops to synchronize ductwork/piping/module production with field needs and delivery requirements
Union dispatchers to forecast pipefitter/plumber/sheet metal manpower requirements
Owner Representatives during schedule review meetings
Develop training modules for superintendents on schedule compliance
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, finance, or other related degrees
Minimum of at least 7+ years scheduling mechanical construction projects exceeding $10 million in value
Expert proficiency in Primavera P6 software with a portfolio demonstrating:
Working knowledge of:
Professional certification(s) such as PMP, PSP, or CCM preferred
Salary & Benefits
Range: $115,000-$140,000
