The New Jersey Chapter of the Nature Conservancy (TNC) is hiring a short-term Cities Adaptation Assistant to work with our Cities program to advance the implementation of nature-based solutions in Newark and Paterson, New Jersey with a focus on climate adaptation. The Cities Adaptation Assistant will play a significant role in building and sustaining TNC's leadership in the field of climate adaptation in the urban environment by enhancing data-driven decision-making, informing policy recommendations and strategic initiatives, and supporting implementation of nature-based solutions.

The Cities Adaptation Assistant will support TNC New Jersey's 2030 climate adaptation goals as follows:
* Use public maps and datasets to pinpoint urban flooding in Newark and Paterson. Work with community organizations to gather qualitative data on riverine flooding, sewer overflow, erosion, resource access, and community challenges. Compile findings into a report outlining nature-based options to address these issues.
* Perform literature review and key informant interviews to understand public perception of trees in Newark.
* Collect and use quantitative and qualitative spatial data to assess existing conditions and visualize areas of opportunity around extreme heat, tree canopy, and public health.
* Apply data analysis skills to support marketing and communications around key environmental issues and their impacts on Newark and Paterson.
* Collaborate with members of the New Jersey Cities team to develop and maintain strong relationships with community-based organizations in Newark and Paterson.
* Create, maintain, and manage a comprehensive database of community partners. This database will serve as a vital resource for our organization, facilitating effective communication, collaboration, and relationship management with key stakeholders.
* Support implementation of community-driven environmental initiatives in Newark and Paterson by assisting TNC colleagues and community partners with tree plantings, conducting community outreach, attending events, and other similar duties, as assigned.
The successful applicant will communicate and work regularly with their supervisor, Cities program staff, and partner organizations to to implement the Cities work plan and assist with other projects, as needed. You may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
One position is available: 5/15/25 - 11/15/25 (6 months, start date is flexible).
This position is paid for 35 hours of work per week at $28 per hour. Must have reliable transportation to/from Newark and Paterson, New Jersey.
* Associates degree in natural resources, sustainability, environmental studies, urban studies, geography, human ecology or equivalent combination of education and 6 months' experience.
* Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.
* Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., community-based organizations, residents, government officials, and internal scientists.
* Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
* Can work independently and exercise independent judgment.
* Organization and time management.
* Demonstrated ability to learn on the job.
* Proficiency in data collection and analysis, both qualitative and quantitative.
* Experience conducting spatial analysis; ffamiliarity with ArcGIS Pro and data analysis tools (e.g., R, Python).
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
* Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program.
