Position Overview
The Department of Earth and Environmental Systems at the University of the South, Sewanee TN, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology for the 2025-26 academic year.
Position Description
The University of the South's 13,000-acre property at the edge of the Cumberland Plateau is used extensively in teaching and research and the Department of Earth and Environmental Systems offers four majors: Geology, Natural Resources, Forestry, Environment and Sustainability, as well as a certificate in Watershed Sciences.
Attributes of a Successful Candidate
The successful candidate will teach six courses per year (a laboratory component of a class counts as one course), including a field-based introductory geology course, and one or more courses that complement our existing geology curriculum. This could include topics in karst hydrology, geophysics, paleontology, geochemistry, dendrochronology, climate science, or other geology electives. Applicants should have a: Ph.D., or be at the ABD stage, in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, or a neighboring discipline. Additionally, demonstrated success in teaching and the ability to drive a 12-passenger van will both be required.
