Overview: The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Application Engineer is responsible for the technical scope required to deliver BESS proposals. This includes understanding the customer's energy needs, energy profiles, lifecycle requirements, and the technical aspects of BESS design to ensure low lifecycle cost, quality, reliability, constructability, and operation. The role requires knowledge of applicable codes, such as regional electrical codes and standards, to ensure compliance and optimal design.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Engage with potential customers to promote BESS solutions that meet their energy needs.
Manage customer relationships in both proactive and reactive capacities, resolving concerns and ensuring satisfaction.
Provide documentation and feedback on BESS solutions to assist customers through the interconnection and permitting processes.
Ensure proposed solutions adhere to applicable industry standards and electrical engineering design principles, including UL, CSA, IEEE, NFPA codes.
Meet with Authorities Having Jurisdiction to address open plan check comments, including structural, electrical, and fire-related feedback.
Manage the BESS commissioning process to ensure seamless operation and customer satisfaction.
Advise on the role of inverters and power control system technologies within BESS applications.
Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to tailor offerings based on customer needs and market demands.
Mentor less experienced staff and provide technical support and guidance to team members.
Requirements:
4-year college degree (preferred).
5+ years of relevant technical experience or applications engineering experience with photovoltaics and battery energy storage systems (OEM experience preferred).
Deep understanding of renewables and battery storage systems, including microgrid design, control schema for different use cases such as stand-alone storage, PV + storage, microgrids with multiple generation forms, and load control.
Solid knowledge of single-line drawings and equipment specifications.
Expertise in codes and standards related to battery-based energy storage systems, including UL9540, UL1741, UL9540A, NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 855, International Building Code (IBC), California Title 24, and California Rule 21.
Ability to travel to locations in North America as required.
Prior experience in developing BESS proposals.
