The Baltimore Sun seeks a skilled and strategic Newsroom Analytics Manager to parse our metrics, playing a daily and long-term role using data to help editors make decisions on how they use reporting and creative resources. The ideal candidate is passionate about journalism and has a strong understanding of analytics tools, audience engagement strategies, and the evolving digital media landscape.
This role will also lead efforts to optimize content for search engines, ensure our journalism reaches the widest possible audience, and serve as a digital leader in the newsroom, championing a culture of experimentation and innovation.
Essential Functions
Collaborate with newsroom leaders to establish and monitor key performance indicators that align with audience growth strategies and editorial goals.
Analyze data from various platforms (website, mobile, social media, newsletters, push alerts) to provide actionable insights on audience engagement, content performance, and trends.
Work closely with editorial teams to identify opportunities for audience retention, growth, and deeper engagement.
Produce data-oriented analyses that provide insights and present them to partners and leaders across the organization.
Build and maintain dashboards and reports to track performance metrics in real-time and over time.
Provide regular training and support to journalists and editors on using analytics tools and understanding audience data.
Conduct A/B tests and experiments to refine content strategies, headlines, and distribution methods.
Partner with product, marketing, and technology teams to ensure seamless integration of analytics across platforms.
Assist newsroom leaders in developing and implementing incentive programs aimed at improving content performance and driving organizational goals.
Delivering on time with minimal to moderate supervision.
Stay up-to-date with trends in digital journalism, audience development, and analytics technology.
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in journalism, data science, marketing, or a related field.
3+ years of experience in a newsroom, analytics, or related role.
Proficiency with analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Parse.ly, or similar platforms.
Mastery of SQL and experience working in Google BigQuery, AWS, or other big data environments.
Strong understanding of social media analytics, SEO, and audience engagement strategies.
Ability to interpret complex data and translate it into actionable insights for non-technical audiences.
Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills.
Familiarity with newsroom workflows and content management systems.
Salary Range: $70,000 - $95,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors such as experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
