Internal Audit is responsible for providing independent assurance and guidance across all lines of business and team members are encouraged to think creatively, challenge current processes, build relationships, identify, and evaluate current and emerging risks, and hold themselves and teammates accountable in a flexible and delivery driven environment. This role reports to the Deputy Chief Audit Executive, is a member of Audit Operating Leadership Team, with people leadership responsibilities.


The Senior Managing Director of Audit, with a Regulatory/Compliance focus, is highly driven and is responsible for overseeing, developing and executing internal audit strategy and coverage for regulatory compliance risks. Work is highly complex and strategic in nature and decisions have impact across the organization. This position brings deep expertise in compliance and regulatory risks for large financial institutions, including heightened standards and evolving compliance requirements. This position maintains overall ownership for risk assessment and audit strategy execution across multiple LOBs, programs, processes, and initiatives. This position leverages data analytics to drive insights and efficiency. This leader manages and influences cross functional resources. This position focuses on department results and ensures adequacy of resources through hiring practices and/or co-sourcing and is responsible for all HR related decisions and people leadership for Audit.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Develops and sustains collaborative relationships with Webster management, through periodic and effective communications.


  • Holds quarterly meetings as well as ongoing interaction with multiple aligned senior and executive management to maintain strong one-on-one relationships outside of the audit process.


  • Demonstrates the ability to negotiate and be persuasive in discussions of complex and sensitive issues.


  • Represents Internal Audit via Committee participation and interaction with our risk partners.


  • Presents updates quarterly to external regulators and external auditors.


  • May be requested to present on a special topic at a Board level Committee meeting.


  • Effectively engages with management and guides the team's adaptability and methods of communication while working remotely.


  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the regulatory and compliance landscape and business, including LOB strategic choices and transformational initiatives, and the regulatory environment.


  • Demonstrates importance of quality work.


  • Reviews work product of team and communicates necessary modifications in a timely manner.


  • Prepares well-written reports and other written communication using the appropriate business & technical language and results in minimal revisions.


  • Takes responsibility for the quality of the team's work product by addressing the needs/risks of the Bank and expectations of the regulators/external auditors.


  • Sets and meets the department's metrics.


  • Uses data analytics proactively and effectively to drive meaningful and efficient audit results.


  • Proactively manages staff performance to metrics and monitors capacity.


  • Oversees the timely execution of the Portfolio audit responsibilities.


  • Leads process/audit methodology improvement/change initiatives.


  • Leads and influences, setting tone for colleagues in support of Webster's strong risk culture.


  • Ensures compliance with Audit's risk-based methodology during audits and projects.


  • Demonstrates technical/subject matter expertise in regulatory and compliance matters.


  • Drives enhancements in IA methodology.


  • Demonstrates leadership on highly complex projects and/or issues or events critical to the organization with high exposure.


  • Responsible for decisions/activities that have significant impact on the organization's efficiency and effectiveness.


  • Significantly contributes to strategic vision and direction. Anticipates future issues and needs and prepares plans in response.


  • Drives high quality standards and adherence to department metrics.

Education, Experience and Specific Skills:


  • Bachelor's Degree (Masters preferred) in a related field required


  • 14+ years of experience of experience auditing (internally or externally) financial services companies with 8+ in a management capacity with strong people leadership skills.


  • Strong understanding of compliance risks and regulatory requirements for banks approaching the $100 billion threshold.


  • Expertise in OCC heightened standards and regulatory compliance of FRB Category IV financial institutions, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act/AML, fair lending, consumer protection laws, and other key regulatory areas.


  • Strategic thinker and ability to lead and influence in a fast-paced, evolving regulatory environment.


  • Strong verbal and written communication, organization, analytical and project management skills.


  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Visio, Word, PowerPoint and data analytics tools (e.g., SQL, Python, ACL, Tableau).


  • Certification required (One or more of) including but not limited to CPA, CIA, CERP, CRCM, CAMS, CISA.


  • Working knowledge of audit practices and standards.


  • High level of integrity and commitment to ethical standards and Bank values.


This position is a remote position, with a desire for the candidate to be based within Webster Bank's footprint (CT, NY, MA, RI).


The estimated base salary range for this position is $195,000 USD to $240,000 USD. Actual salary may vary up or down depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position is eligible for incentive compensation.
