Job Summary
Murphy Oil is seeking a highly skilled Data Platform Architect with extensive hands-on experience in designing and implementing modern data platforms and analytics solutions. The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise in data architecture technologies, a strong understanding of data engineering patterns, and exceptional business engagement and communication skills to drive alignment between technical solutions and business objectives. They should possess strong hands-on experience with data lakes, data warehouses and data bricks Lakehouse and unity catalog, ETL/ELT pipelines using data bricks, and real-time data streaming. The candidate will be adept at building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for data platform solutions. A solid understanding of data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and Spotfire is essential for creating insightful dashboards and reports.
Strong business engagement skills are crucial, enabling the candidate to collaborate effectively with stakeholders, gather requirements, and align data strategies with business goals. Exceptional communication skills are required to articulate complex technical concepts to senior leadership, business users, and technical teams. Familiarity with Lakehouse architecture and data mesh design patterns for scalable data storage and analytics is important.
The candidate should have a strong grasp of emerging AI and ML technologies and know how to integrate them into data solutions. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are also necessary for this role.
The Data Platform Architect will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work two (2) days a week remotely.
Responsibilities
Design and implement data platform solutions leveraging modern data architecture patterns, including data lakes, Lakehouse and data mesh
Extensive hands-on experience in designing, implementing, and optimizing data pipelines using Databricks and Data Lake architecture.
Architect and deliver scalable, high-performance data solutions for structured and unstructured data using preferred cloud services on Azure or AWS. Highly preferred Microsoft Azure
Develop and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines for data integration, processing, and deployment
Provide guidance on best practices for data modeling, data governance, and data integration across cloud and on-premises environments
Engage closely with business stakeholders to understand strategic objectives and translate them into scalable technical solutions
Effectively communicate complex data architecture concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and alignment
Drive the adoption of emerging AI and ML technologies by integrating AI-driven capabilities into data solutions for enhanced insights and decision-making
Develop and maintain data visualization and analytics solutions using tools like Power BI, Spotfire
Ensure data security, compliance, and performance optimization within cloud and hybrid environments
Mentor technical teams and provide architectural guidance throughout project delivery
Hands-on experience on data governance platforms such as Alation, Microsoft Purview or Unity Catalog
Licenses/ Certifications
Certification in cloud data engineering or architecture (e.g., Azure Data Engineer, AWS Certified Data Analytics, Databricks certified developer/Architect)
Qualifications/Requirements
Bachelor's degree or above
Experience in data governance, data security, and performance tuning within cloud environments.
Hands-on development experience on building enterprise level data engineering, analytics and AI solutions
Prior experience in leading technical teams and driving end-to-end solution delivery.
Proven experience as a Data Architect or Data Engineer with expertise in modern data platform technologies.
Strong hands-on experience with data lakes, data warehouses, ETL/ELT pipelines, and real-time data streaming.
Expertise in building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for data platform solutions.
Solid understanding of data visualization tools (Power BI, Spotfire, Tableau) for building insightful dashboards and reports.
Strong business engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders, gather requirements, and align data strategies with business goals.
Exceptional communication skills-ability to articulate complex technical concepts to senior leadership, business users, and technical teams.

Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs.
