Position Summary:

USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, works closely with other U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) organizations, Department of Defense (DoD), the Interagency (including Interagency Laboratories), and private companies to accomplish its mission of protecting the Warfighter from biological threats and being prepared to investigate disease outbreaks or threats to public health. This includes conducting Research, Development, Testing, & Evaluation (RDTE) of medical countermeasure against biological threats and the safety, quality assurance, project management, and core support required for these research activities.

The Diagnostic Systems Division (DSD) provides reference diagnostic and disease assessment consultation within the medical community in support of DoD operational requirements. DSD supports analytical studies for advanced development and FDA clearance of diagnostic assays as well as pre-clinical studies of vaccine and therapeutic candidates. The division is functionally organized into four departments: Developmental Diagnostics, Applied Diagnostics, Operational Diagnostics, and Regulated Products.

The Biocurator will support laboratory programs and projects by performing molecular and genomic analysis procedures, focusing on microbiological, molecular, and phenotypic data. This role involves utilizing bioinformatics tools to analyze data, developing and maintaining databases, and supporting laboratory teams with data processing and analysis. The Biocurator will also assist in culture identification and characterization using molecular techniques, prepare technical reports and progress reports, and contribute to scientific publications. This position is contingent upon contract award.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform molecular and genomic analysis procedures in BSL-2, as required, to aggregate, analyze, and interpret microbiological, molecular, sequence, and phenotypic data in support of laboratory programs and projects.
  • Utilize bioinformatics applications to support the analysis of laboratory-acquired data and provide insights into experimental findings.
  • Maintain and improve existing Microsoft Access databases to support the retention, retrieval, and analysis of experimental data.
  • Develop and apply computer codes to process and analyze laboratory-acquired data, ensuring efficient and accurate data handling.
  • Prepare technical reports and manuscripts for publication, including monthly Biocurator BRMR Progress Reports summarizing activities and progress on assigned tasks.
  • Provide culture identification and characterization data to support the reference material collection, utilizing microbiological, molecular, and immunodiagnostic assays, including sequencing platforms such as Illumina and Oxford Nanopore.
  • Train and competency assess Division personnel on key laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques, ensuring high-quality standards in laboratory work.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, bioinformatics, or a related scientific field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 3+ years experience with bioinformatics tools and software for analyzing molecular and genomic data.
  • 3+ years database management, particularly Microsoft Access, and experience in maintaining and improving databases for scientific purposes.
  • 3+ years experience with molecular techniques, including sequencing (e.g., Illumina, Oxford Nanopore), and molecular assays to support microbiological research.
  • Experience in technical writing, including preparing reports, manuscripts, and progress updates for scientific and regulatory purposes.
  • Experience in data analysis and the ability to develop computer codes for processing and interpreting laboratory-acquired data.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance.
  • Active Secret clearance preferred.
