Position Summary:

USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, works closely with other U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) organizations, Department of Defense (DoD), the Interagency (including Interagency Laboratories), and private companies to accomplish its mission of protecting the Warfighter from biological threats and being prepared to investigate disease outbreaks or threats to public health. This includes conducting Research, Development, Testing, & Evaluation (RDTE) of medical countermeasure against biological threats and the safety, quality assurance, project management, and core support required for these research activities.

The Diagnostic Systems Division (DSD) provides reference diagnostic and disease assessment consultation within the medical community in support of DoD operational requirements. DSD supports analytical studies for advanced development and FDA clearance of diagnostic assays as well as pre-clinical studies of vaccine and therapeutic candidates. The division is functionally organized into four departments: Developmental Diagnostics, Applied Diagnostics, Operational Diagnostics, and Regulated Products.

The Advanced Technical Support position provides critical laboratory support for scientific studies and experimentation across various microbiological, molecular, and immunological techniques. The role includes maintaining laboratory equipment, supporting bacterial and viral research, and managing the production, maintenance, and distribution of accredited bacterial reference materials. The individual will work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 environments, ensuring the safety and efficiency of laboratory operations, assisting with laboratory management, and contributing to research and development efforts. This role requires the use of advanced technical knowledge to perform complex experiments and troubleshooting in support of critical research and development initiatives. This position is contingent upon contract award.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Safely work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Support and perform experimentation in scientific studies, including conducting assays, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining documentation and laboratory equipment in the various laboratory environments (BSL-2/3/4).
  • Perform basic microbiological, molecular, and immunological techniques to support bacterial and viral work in the laboratory.
  • Assist suite supervisor and perform suite supervisor duties, which include maintaining detailed knowledge of laboratory instruments, chemicals, biological work, ordering supplies, performing preventative maintenance, conducting safety testing, revising suite-specific manuals, and coordinating personnel within the laboratory.
  • Routinely perform microbiological, diagnostic, and analytic procedures for the production, maintenance, and distribution of accredited bacterial reference materials and reagents, in compliance with the Quality Management System (QMS) and external customer demand.
  • Document laboratory activities and outcomes related to the production, maintenance, and distribution of bacterial reference materials and reagents.
  • Maintain laboratory facilities and equipment, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency. Perform monthly facility and equipment maintenance.
  • Perform advanced microbiological, molecular, and immunological techniques to support research and development initiatives.
  • Independently perform culture identification and characterization using current microbiological, molecular, and immunodiagnostic assays, including sequencing platforms like Illumina and Oxford Nanopore, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and data interpretation as needed.
  • Prepare and present oral, written, and peer-reviewed works on laboratory research and findings.
  • Draft, review, and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) associated with the production, maintenance, and distribution of bacterial reference materials.
  • Design, implement, and interpret microbiological, molecular, and immunological experiments related to basic research and development activities.
  • Prepare and submit monthly BRMR Lab Reports to the TPOC, outlining progress on all tasks.
  • Train and competency assess Division personnel on key laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques to ensure high-quality work.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, or a related scientific field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in a laboratory setting performing microbiological, molecular, and immunological techniques.
  • 3+ years experience in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories, with a proven understanding of lab safety and regulations.
  • 3+ years experience with advanced microbiological and molecular techniques, including real-time PCR, sequencing platforms (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore), and diagnostic testing methods.
  • 3+ years experience maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment and ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Must be eligible to enroll in the BPRP and CS-PRP programs
  • Active BPRP and/or CS-PRP status preferred
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance.
  • Active Secret clearance preferred.
