Melting Lead Technician

Amsted Rail-Griffin Wheel, the leading manufacturer of railroad wheels in North America, is currently seeking a qualified individual for the position of Afternoon Melting Lead for our Groveport foundry.

Position General Description
Under the direct supervision of Production Supervisor, the Melting Department Hourly Lead will serve as the liaison between supervision and the hourly workforce and is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Melting Department. Although the supervisor will listen to and respect the opinion of the Team Lead, administration of formal discipline is not in the scope of this position.

Knowledge and Skills
Best candidates will possess a strong working knowledge of the melting process and related equipment, while also possessing the organization, technical, and leadership necessary to assist supervision with providing daily direction to the workforce, monitoring process performance, and responding to departmental needs to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the department to meet department goals.

Nature and Scope of the Melting Lead
Under the supervision and direction of the Melting Supervisor, the Melting Lead is responsible for the following;
1) Safety - Help ensure safe working conditions and behaviors, support all safety programs inclusive of Behavioral Observations and Recognizing Acts of Safety, ensure employees follow established protocol, make certain needed PPE is available and used, review Safety checklist.
2) Leadership - a) logical thinking, self starting, and organized, respectful of others, b) reasonably strong oral and written communication skills, c) able to manage multiple priorities, d) provide direction and understanding/communicating process flow, e) monitor employee performance and qualifications while providing proactive and appropriate feedback, capable of gaining respect and training/leading others.
3) Technical - a) possess basic math skills and related competencies to ensure the ability to assist with process control and evaluation of records, b) basic computer skills and ability to utilize equipment controlled by PLC, c) strong technical process knowledge regarding the dynamics of melting steel & evaluating final chemistry analysis and making needed adjustments, d) ability to assess condition and performance of melting department processes including but not limited to; ladles, furnaces, roofs, runner, fume collector draw, tapping emissions draw, spectrometer, final chemistry analysis, validate standards, data monitoring & review, form 301's, chemistries.
4) Job Duty/Task Related - Coordinate; a) supplies and maintain when necessary, b) refractories, c) Gundol, d) Syndolag, e) runner, f) alloys, f) charge material, g) electrodes, h) gunning, i) lime, j) injector carbon. Ensure timely EAF production, communicate with crane operators as necessary, coordinate ladle exchange with pouring station/front lead, complete charge tickets and forms such as 301's, validate standards, monitor process data, serve as trainer and back up for all jobs in the department such as 1st helper, 2nd helper, Furnace maintenance.

5) Physical Demands - The individual holding this position must be able to relieve and work in all the various position within the department. The Melting Lead must be able to perform heavy work, lifting up to seventy pounds, the ability to shovel, climb steps and ladders, walk across uneven surfaces, work in a hot and dirty environment, and work long or extended hours/shifts with little advance notice. 6) Cognitive Abilities - The Melting Lead must be of reasonable intelligence, possess basic math skills, be capable of reading gauges and charts and understanding/applying basic statistical process control, use a computer to monitor and maintain process information. Organized thought process, having the ability to manage multiple priorities.
