Overview
Teaching and other classroom activities:
Present childbirth and parenting classes to pregnant individuals and their families to include the following topics: pregnancy; nutrition; labor, birth and postpartum; family-centered maternity care; emotional changes; obstetrical procedures; vaginal and cesarean birth; labor coping skills; infant feeding; and early parenting.
Assist pregnant families to discover and use strategies that facilitate safe, natural and healthy pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and early parenting. Help women and their families to understand how interventions and complications influence the natural course of labor and birth.
Promote attachment between babies and their families by providing information about the capabilities and needs of the newborn and the parents.
Act as an advocate to promote safe, natural, healthy and fulfilling childbearing experience for women and their families.
Set up classroom, obtain supplies and equipment, manage classroom with up to 60 participants.
Promotes ongoing learning and improvement in self and program. Evaluates educational efforts to recommend alternatives that will promote continuous improvement. May participate in the development, review, revision and distribution of relevant education materials. Utilizes education materials and methodologies as reviewed and approved by the Childbirth and Early
Parenting Educator group, Center for Women’s Health, Oregon Health and Science University. Maintains a current knowledge base within the area of expertise.
Maintains effective communication with other educators, health care providers and staff to facilitate a consistent educational program for individual clients. Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to hospital policies.
Maintains and utilizes knowledge base in providing education to clients. Works collaboratively with other educators, health care providers and staff to advocate for and facilitate optimal health through education. Identifies areas and subjects for ongoing personal and team development. Obtain information regarding program through attendance at staff meetings and written updates. Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment, in a manner that utilizes flexibility in scheduling, work hours and approach.

Responsibilities
Certification as a Childbirth Educator through Lamaze International or International Childbirth Education Association or similar national organization with established certification criteria OR
One year of experience teaching childbirth or related classes. In addition, certification through Lamaze International or International Childbirth Education Association or similar national organization with established certification must be obtained within one year of hire date OR
Certification as a Lactation Consultant through International Lactation Consultant Association or similar national organization with established certification criteria. OR
One year of experience teaching adult, community based health education classes. In addition, certification through International Lactation Consultant Association or similar national organization with established certification criteria must be obtained within one year or hire date. OR
Certification as an American Heart Association Instructor.
Basic Life Support certification required.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree, RN, Focused education and training as an educator (health or community education)
Master's Degree in Health Education, Nursing, or related field
2-3 years’ experience in health education.
Experience teaching Childbirth & Early Parenting Education.
Experience working in women's health specialty areas; focus on pregnancy, labor, delivery, post-partum care
