The Product Development Scientist is responsible for developing products that meet the requirements of the customer(s) request while ensuring all safety and quality requirements are met and works with the product development team on strategic initiatives to expand Formulife's supplement product line. The Product Development Scientist will have KPIs in all stages, including but not limited to the process for specified projects spanning innovation, flavor, collaborating with customers, vendors, and internal departments, cost optimization, and commercialization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
To develop prototype samples, plans for scale up batches for stability test, prepares product samples for stability test, stores and records samples in laboratory.
Assures that materialsused, and materials manufactured meet writtenspecifications for physical and chemical attributes necessary for product manufacture
Performs raw materialevaluations, documents all data collected during testing and evaluates same for completeness and correctness
Performs and/or assistsin various phases of R&Dand product development activities. Process lab batches and scale up batches using scales, blenders, tablet presses, encapsulators, coaters, granulators, mills, rollers, compactors, etc.
Maintain branded ingredient and raw material database
Research potential ingredients based on physicalproperties such as solubility for particular form factors.
Forge relationships with key suppliers, and purchasing team to keep abreast of upcoming trends, to solicit and secure opportunities for new food ideas, technologies, ingredients, and packaging materials.
Lead product tastings,evaluations, etc., and analyze/record resultsin a statistical/analytical manner.
Test new productsfor flavor, texture, color, nutritional content,and adherence to government and industry standards.
Stay up to date on new regulations and currentevents regarding food scienceby reviewing scientific literature.
Study the structure and composition of raw ingredients or the changes raw ingredients undergoin storage and processing.
Develop new food items for production, based on consumerfeedback.
Maintain accurate recordsof lab work, documentation of ingredients, and provide statistical evaluations and reports
Perform other dutiesas assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Food safety standardsand regulations.
Knowledge of cGMPs
Ability to manageprocesses and procedures.
Ability to manageteam members effectively.
Ability to work in an environment with inside/outside extremetemperatures and in noisy environments.
Knowledge of Nutritional science and formulation principles FDA, cGMP, NSF, and other regulatory compliance requirements
Knowledge of Raw material and ingredient functionality
Knowledge of Food safety and quality standards including HACCP and GMP
Ability to conduct product development lifecycles from R&D to commercialization
Knowledge of labeling regulations, supplement facts panels, and permissible health claims
Scientific research and problem-solving skills
Knowledge of data analysis and reporting of lab test results and production records
Project management and cross-functional collaboration
Ability to develop and improve supplement formulations for efficacy and stability
Adapt to changing regulatory requirements and compliance measures
Troubleshoot production challenges and formulation stability issues
Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Bachelor's degreeB.S. in Chemicalengineering, pharmaceutical sciences,Nutraceutical sciences, Nutrition, Food Engineering, Food Technology, Food Science, or similar is preferred.

In the absence of the Product Development Scientist, the Product Development Assistant or a same-level trained employee will overseethe daily dutiesand responsibilities regardingoperation workflow and adherence of the SOPs and cGMPs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The work is sedentary, requiring extended period of sitting or standing to perform the work. There may be some infrequent movement from area-to-area to transport items weighing no more than 20 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the primary dutiesof the job, the employeeis regularly exposedto various outdoor and indoor environments (i.e. general office, industrial complexes, food processing plants, semiconductor labs, clean rooms, etc., some of which can be hazardous). Temperature variances, high noise levels, and dusty environments may be encountered.
