Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Propellant Scientist to lead our propellant formulation and characterization team. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in chemistry and chemical engineering with a strong background in propellant formulation science, energetic materials characterization, and large-scale propellant mixing operations. This role requires a dynamic leader who can oversee a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians while managing multiple propellant development programs.

Essential Functions:
  • Conduct bench-scale synthesis and characterization of materials relevant to solid rocket propulsion.
  • Perform analytical chemistry work utilizing techniques such as Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC).
  • Lead and manage a team responsible for large-scale propellant mixing operations.
  • Oversee propellant development programs, including formulation, characterization, and testing.
  • Plan and execute rocket motor propellant testing campaigns and demonstrations.
  • Utilize materials characterization tools such as thermomechanical analysis and scattering techniques to analyze propellant materials.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Communicate technical results effectively to team members, stakeholders, and leadership.

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, and Skills Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • Extensive knowledge of propellant formulation science and the characterization of energetic materials.
  • Experience with materials characterization tools, including thermomechanical analysis and scattering techniques.
  • Experience managing teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Strong organizational, punctuality, and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and team collaboration abilities.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance.
  • Must have a valid, state issued, driver's license and minimum California car insurance.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in solid rocket propulsion research and development.
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale propellant processing and testing.
  • Familiarity with government or military project environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Physical Demands:

Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. May require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday. Will require working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Proper lifting techniques required.

Work Environment:

The performance of this position may require exposure to the manufacturing and laboratory areas, where under certain conditions require the use of personal equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses with side shields, mandatory hearing protection, and/or protective gloves.
