The Association of Women in Water, Energy and Environment (AWWEE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports a diverse community of more than 4,500 members. This position will play a critical role in advancing AWWEE's mission to foster a community dedicated to the advancement of all women in the fields of water, energy, and environment. The Director of Membership and Engagement will develop and implement strategies to increase membership, enhance member engagement, and build long-term, sustainable relationships with members, supporters, and partners. This dynamic role blends membership management, community engagement, fundraising, and organizational leadership to drive AWWEE's continued success and impact. As a newly created position, there is an opportunity for the right candidate to shape its impact and evolve the position over time.
What You Will Do
In collaboration with the Executive Director, other staff, and AWWEE's Board of Directors, the Director of Membership & Engagement will be responsible for the following:
Membership Strategy and Growth
Serve as primary staff support to Membership Committee - Assist the committee Chair with scheduling, preparing agendas, and maintaining accurate meeting records. Drive the implementation of committee initiatives. Track and report on progress
Develop and implement strategies to increase membership among organizations and individuals
Lead outreach efforts to expand the membership base, including student and hardship members
Ensure membership level structure and rates are competitive and comparable to other industry organizations
Manage new member onboarding, including invoicing, setting up group memberships, and providing support
Respond to general membership inquiries and provide excellent customer service
Member Engagement and Retention
Build and maintain strong relationships with members
Develop and manage initiatives to deepen member engagement and foster community
Collect and analyze member feedback to monitor member satisfaction and identify opportunities for event and program improvement
Monitor the effectiveness of programs and recommend enhancements to increase member engagement
Track and report on membership metrics, including growth, retention, and engagement rates
Manage the membership database
Manage the member renewal process to ensure timely renewals
Industry and Community Engagement
Cultivate relationships with like-minded organizations relevant to the industries AWWEE serves
Identify opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships to advance AWWEE's mission
Represent AWWEE within the community, including at university career events, events and conferences hosted by relevant industry groups or organizations, and networking opportunities
Marketing and Communications
Serve as primary staff support to Marketing and Fundraising Committee - Assist committee Chair with scheduling, preparing agendas, and maintaining accurate meeting records. Drive the implementation of committee initiatives. Track and report on progress/
Develop and execute strategies for marketing and communications campaigns to promote membership and engagement
Ensure consistent messaging across all platforms to increase visibility and awareness of the organization
Create and manage marketing materials, including digital content, brochures, and promotional materials
Develop and implement social media strategy
Fundraising
Lead efforts to leverage corporate giving programs, including matching gifts and sponsorships to increase funding from the business community
Collaborate with the Marketing and Fundraising Committee to develop and implement fundraising initiatives
Develop sponsorship materials, support sponsorship outreach, and ensure sponsors receive benefits as promised
Other
Identify opportunities to align offerings with membership and fundraising goals
Assist with Board of Director meeting preparation, including preparing reports and presentations
Provide support for events, programs, and general administrative activities, as needed
Provide backup support when other staff are unavailable to ensure continuity of operations

The ideal candidate for this position will be a highly skilled professional with a proven track record in membership management, community engagement, or a similar role, particularly in a nonprofit setting. This position will be especially rewarding for someone who has a passion for helping women succeed. As part of a small team, the ideal candidate will be ready to roll up their sleeves to tackle any challenge and offer support where needed. Since we're a remote team, being organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently are essential for success in this position.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, business, or a related field
Minimum of 3 years' relevant experience in membership management or a similar role
Core Competencies
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience presenting to a range of audiences
Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to forge connections that advance organizational goals
Proven expertise in creating and executing strategies for member recruitment, retention, and engagement
Knowledge of fundraising strategies, experience in grant research and writing a plus
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a focus on strategic goals and team collaboration
Experience in event planning and execution
Ability to work effectively with a Board of Directors and committees
Technical Skills
Proficient working with membership databases and CRM systems
Demonstrated ability to analyze and report on data to set goals, to measure the success of initiatives, and to identify areas for improvement
Familiarity with social media platforms, digital marketing tools, and creative software like Canva for business communications
Basic knowledge of webpage design and maintenance, with the ability to update and manage content
Physical Demands of the Position
Ability to work at a computer and participate in virtual meetings
Ability to travel to attend events, conferences and meetings, which may involve long periods of standing, walking, and lifting light materials (e.g., event materials, promotional items)
Ability to adjust to different working environments
Periodic evening or weekend work may be required to attend events
