GENERAL PURPOSE:


The Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Anatomy & Physiology provides instruction and advising to


undergraduate students. This tenure-track faculty appointment includes a full-time teaching load with either a course release or stipend for directing the Longaker Animal Lab and Barlow Body Donor Lab throughout the year. In addition to teaching, the position includes office hours, advising, committee work, research, and opportunities for continued professional development.






SUPERVISION RECEIVED:


Reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.






SUPERVISION EXERCISED:


The Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Anatomy & Physiology will be responsible for supervising teaching


assistants and student researchers in the department, as well as volunteers and workers in the Animal Lab.






ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


The Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Anatomy Physiology will:



  • Teach upper-level lecture and laboratory courses in Human Anatomy & Physiology, and laboratory courses in mammalian dissection, and cadaver prosection

  • Utilize innovative and collaborative teaching methods in support of the Department's mission and learning objectives that promote biology knowledge, laboratory techniques, critical thinking, and communication competency within the discipline.

  • Attend department and university faculty meetings.

  • Advise students in scheduling classes and making progress toward degree completion and career progression.

  • Mentor undergraduate student conducting research projects.

  • Contribute to Departmental and interdisciplinary initiatives, including recruitment and retention efforts, and curriculum development.

  • Participate in University activities including but not limited to: committee assignments and activities, extra- and co-curricular activities supporting student success and achievement in alignment with a liberal arts tradition, and professional development activities which personally and academically enhance a professional academic career.

  • Perform other essential duties as assigned/as outlined in the Faculty Manual. Additional duties directing the Longaker Animal Lab and Barlow Body Donor Lab:

  • Instruct students in all ethical aspects of work in these labs.

  • Manage funds related to the running of the lab.

  • Longaker Animal Lab: Space for breeding and caring for rats and mice and some other lower organism for research and curricular purposes. Although Heidelberg confines its use to animal not included in the animal welfare act, and assemble IACUC inspects the lab, reviews research proposal, and evaluates animal use in the lab curricular.

  • Function as the permanent Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for the Department/Institution.

  • Exercise ultimate responsibility for the welfare of research and lab curriculum animals.

  • Train and Supervise the Animal Laboratory Coordinator.


Barlow Body Donor Lab: Three donor bodies (one exchange every year) for prosection by seniors and used in junior level Human Anatomy and Physiology.



  • Arrange for procurement and return of the donor body, and insure compliance with contract

  • Supervise Student's creation and running of the annual Donor Appreciation Ceremony

Requirements


DESIRED ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS:



Education and Professional Experience:


(A) Ph.D. in Physiology, Anatomy, or related field, or equivalent credentials (D.V.M, D.A.S, etc). ABD candidates will be considered.


(B) College-level teaching (lecture and laboratory) experience.


(C) Sufficient background to teach upper-level lecture and laboratory courses in Anatomy and Physiology.


(D) Ability to perform/supervise research with undergraduates.






Preferred Education and Experience:



  • Two years college-level teaching, (lecture and laboratory) experience.

  • Background in physiology or anatomy.

  • Experience with maintaining a small animal laboratory.

  • Experience with instruction using cadavers.

  • Familiarity with small liberal arts student-focused institutions.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:


The following laboratory equipment is available for teaching labs and/or research projects: iWorx


Human/Animal Physiology system, set of compound microscopes, microscope slide sets for normal and


pathological human tissue, dissecting scopes, camera systems for trinocular compound and dissection


scope, autoclaves, water baths, micropipettes, surgical lights and platforms, rabbit/cat dissection trays


and lids, disarticulated cat skeletal skeletons, extensive sets of human Bone Clone skeletal materials, xRay


screens, downward drafting hydraulic body donor tables, rat cages/shelves/water bottles, washer/dryer,


CO2 tank, chest freezer and refrigerator.


Other departmental equipment available includes: incubators, autoclave, -20 and -80 freezers, sets of


compound and dissecting microscopes, digital microscopes, epifluorescent research microscopes, thermal


cyclers, quantitative PCR cycler, tissue embedding and microtome sectioning equipment, agarose and


SDS-PAGE gel electrophoresis equipment, and microscope slide collections.


Knowledge of operation and use of various office equipment including, but not limited to: personal


computer, including spreadsheet and word processing software, integrated database software, copier,


telephone, scanner, and printers.






PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by




an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use arms, hands and fingers to


operate and manipulate equipment generally found in an office setting. The employee may be frequently


required to be mobile, communicate, and hear. The employee may occasionally be subject to a variety of


outdoor environmental conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation.


The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more


than fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color


vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Mental demands include varied


degrees of occasional stress while performing job duties.






WORK ENVIRONMENT:




The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an




employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in an office setting, and educational


facilities including laboratories, all of which may be indoor or outdoor. The noise level in the work


environment will range from moderately quiet to occasionally loud.
