The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University, as part of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR), supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. The Stanford University Fire Marshal's Office (SUFMO) is part of Stanford University's Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and provides comprehensive services to the Stanford community encompassing all aspects of Fire Safety. All SUFMO staff are dedicated to supporting the academic, research, clinical and public service missions of the University. By providing engineering, education, maintenance, and inspection services, we allow the Stanford community to pursue their goals in a safe environment.

The SUFMO group is seeking a Fire Sprinkler Technician to perform journeyman-level work involved in the installation, testing, inspection maintenance, and repair of the fire sprinkler monitoring equipment for the Stanford campus and certain related facilities. After receiving instructions and work specifications from a supervisor, your assignments will be inspected in progress and upon completion for compliance with specifications. In this position you will:

• Perform code (NFPA 25) required inspection, testing, and maintenance. Install, repair, replace and fire sprinkler control valves, check valves and other various appurtenances. Coordinate testing schedule with building managers.


• Install new fire sprinkler heads and associated sprinkler piping. Relocate and replace existing sprinkler heads and associated sprinkler piping. Cut, ream, thread and groove all sizes of sprinkler pipe as needed for projects and repairs.


• Repair sprinkler systems that have been damaged or installed incorrectly. Modify sprinkler systems to maintain proper coverage for tenant improvements.


• Perform minor fire pump repair and tests. Perform minor repairs on monitoring devices (tamper switch/flow switch). Take fire panels off-line, isolate and drain sprinkler systems to allow outside contractors to perform necessary work. Assist in back-flow prevention testing program with Stanford's Utilities Department (Water program).


• Inspect and assist with fire sprinkler portion of final walk-throughs for new construction sites and projects; perform system acceptance tests with Santa Clara County Fire Marshal's Office staff as needed.


• Complete all required documentation (test sheets, work orders, etc.).


• Maintain computer-based inspections in accordance with applicable regulations.


• Comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices. Provide EH&S support as assigned during emergencies.


• Respond to campus or SLAC emergencies.


• Use personal protection equipment (PPE) that is appropriate to the work being performed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. Three years' experience installation, inspection and testing of water based fire sprinkler systems or a combination of education and relevant experience.

To be successful in this position, you need:

• Working knowledge of the methods and materials used in fire sprinkler installation, inspection, testing and maintenance.


• Demonstrated ability and experience in the safe use of a pipe-threading machine (cut, ream, thread and groove in standard measurements and shapes) and other small tools used on a daily basis.


• Demonstrated ability and experience in the safe use of a one-person or scissor lift.


• Thorough working knowledge of general work safety procedures and other applicable regulations.


• Ability to understand basic sprinkler working drawings and produce work exactly as shown.


• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.


• Ability to use PC-based computers for data entry, e-mail, and other applications.


• Familiarity with National Fire Protection Association Code 13 (Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems) and Code 25 (Standard for the Inspection Testing and Maintenance of Water-based Fire Protection Systems).

Certifications and Licenses:

• Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License.


• State certification or NICET Level 1 certification in Inspection and Testing of Water-based Systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's License and drive day and night.


• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. safely and carry it a short distance.


• Constantly stand/walk, grasp lightly and work/reach above shoulders.


• Frequently climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), grasp forcefully, perform desk based computer tasks and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.


• Occasionally sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.


• Rarely kneel/crawl, use telephone, write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, sweep/scrub/mop, operate hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull that weigh up to or more than 40 pounds.


• Ability to walk and carry/climb ladders for an extended period of time. Be able to use hands to turn sprinkler valves to verify proper operation. Ability to carry pipe that may weigh up to 30 pounds. Be able to use a wrench above head on a ladder.


• Ability to see and read LCD displays on fire alarm control panels. Be able to communicate with other techs using a hand-held radio and cell phone. Ability to read a computer screen to check fire sprinkler signals.


• Be able to operate a man-lift when needed to reach fire protection equipment in very high locations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.


• Respond to service calls 24x7 when on-call.


• May work remotely from home to check status of fire alarm systems.


• May be required to travel out of town for training.


• May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, heavy metals, temperature extremes, dust, all types of chemicals used in labs, fiberglass insulation.


• May work in confined spaces or at heights greater than 10 feet.

The expected pay range (A31) for this position is $43.36 (Step 1) to $52.67 (step 10) per hour.
