Position Summary
The Maintenance Technician II performs semi-skilled maintenance and repairs on buildings, facilities, and equipment. They coordinate and prioritize daily work orders with a supervisor, troubleshoot issues independently, and determine appropriate solutions. Responsibilities include completing work orders in basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC, as well as collaborating with specialized technicians when needed. Additionally, this role oversees maintenance personnel and coordinates assignments to ensure efficient task completion.
The ideal candidate has a minimum of two or more years of demonstrated hands-on familiarity with facilities maintenance or specialty trade/craft (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Power generation, manufacturing, etc.).
Workplace Requirements:
This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person at F&CP PM Shop, from Monday through Friday, from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change. This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions.
Hiring Range:
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, and the salary range is $20.43 - $25.43, contingent upon qualifications and experience. * Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements
2 plus years of experience
In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted
Skills:
Moderate repair knowledge and proper use of associated tools and equipment, including drill/driver, screwdrivers, wrenches, ratchets, metering devices, water pump, vacuum pump, multimeter, tablet GUI, anemometer, and other instruments and technical equipment required to troubleshoot and analyze problems in electrical circuits or assemble and disassemble machinery
Ability to communicate at many levels, both orally and in writing
Ability to manage multiple priorities
Organizational skills
Basic ability to read mechanical blueprints and electrical schematic diagrams associated with equipment type
Basic mechanical aptitude
Basic computer aptitude
Aware of NEC, NFPA, and OSHA guidelines
Time management skills

Preferences:
College or Trade School degree
Experience working in a team environment
Journeyman qualifications or equivalent in one of the technical crafts (electrician, mechanic, or air conditioning, plumbing, or pipefitting)
Analytical skills, clear reasoning ability, and be trusted to work on his/her own
Good working knowledge of transfer switches, bus ducts, and motors
Ability to build and sustain relationships with campus customers and focus on customer service
A motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Ability to interpret mechanical/electrical drawings and instructions
Capability to fully understand sophisticated, state-of-the-art interactive systems and the analytical ability to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions
Good computer skills including working with word processing software, spreadsheets, and computerized maintenance management systems
Valid Texas Driver's License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past 5 years
Essential Functions:
Works independently to troubleshoot and diagnose assigned requests in order to determine the correct course of action
Oversees other maintenance personnel while tasks are being performed and coordinates other assignments
Orders and maintains adequate supplies and equipment and directs inventory and storage for use by maintenance
Works with outside technicians to gain a better understanding of the issue and how it was repaired
Meets with appropriate vendors and contractors for overall planning and improvement projects
Assists other maintenance personnel to complete tasks across campus
Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions:
Enters work orders and daily work time on a computer
Assists in troubleshooting and repairing motor circuits, power circuits, and electrical systems and equipment, including associated controls and alarms
General facilities maintenance, including moving furnishings, cleaning HVAC coils and ductwork, changing filters on HVAC units, cleaning coils on HVAC units, cleaning machine rooms, maintaining lint-collecting systems in laundry rooms, manual valve maintenance, equipment inspection and reporting, function tests, and disassembling or reassembling equipment
Monitors inventory and supplies/equipment for use by maintenance personnel
For more complex issues, will coordinate diagnosis and repair with outside specialty shop technicians and appropriate supervisors to generate applicable work orders and gain a better understanding of how to correct the issue
Inspects, repairs, and cleans machinery, equipment, tools, and work areas
Assists other maintenance personnel to complete tasks across campus
Working Conditions
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift loads no greater than 50 lbs.
Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and work around confined areas with piping and wiring obstructions, as needed, to access equipment
Requires moderate to heavy physical activity, including bending, stooping, climbing, balancing, standing, and walking up to 8 hours per day
Occasionally required to enter utility tunnels and confined spaces
Physical Environment:
Requires exposure to high-pressure boilers and steam piping, high voltage electricity, high noise levels, rotating and other potentially dangerous equipment
Requires work in mechanical rooms, tunnels, labs, attics, crawl spaces, non-conditioned spaces, and dusty, dirty, and wet conditions
Requires personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety shoes, and safety glasses
Work Hours and Travel:
After-hours work may be required, or other work outside the regular schedule may be needed
Available on a continuous "on-call" basis for response to problems and emergencies that affect campus operations
May require periodic travel to classes, conferences, and vendor sites as needed
Essential Personnel:
This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.
