Position: Field Engineer Intern
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Field Engineer Internship is a 12-week paid program for current Civil Engineering or Construction Management students working to build relationships and work experience in our industry. The Field Engineer Intern will report principally to the Career Development Coordinator and secondarily to the management structure of whichever craft they are assigned to at that time for day-to-day functions.
JOB DUTIES:
Perform all duties and tasks within the guidelines set forth in the policies and procedures manual. Ideally, the candidate will gain real work and administrative experience in our industry, within the following areas:
- Workforce Development
- Safety
- Shadow Superintendent
- Fleet and Transportation
- Trucking and Surveying
- Estimation and Project Management
- Quarry
- Plant
- Quality Control/Labs
- Paving
- Grading
- Learn the field operations in regards to required labor, from simple to complex, by hands-on application and practice.
- Learn the quality control measures and progress checks in seeing a project through completion.
- Work with laborers, operators, pipe layers, mechanics, and other skilled craftsmen to have a thorough understanding of the tasks and duties associated with building projects.
- Work with Foremen and Project Engineers to understand the volumes, areas, and other mathematical requirements to build a project.
- Learn from the project team how to enter time and materials reports for the jobsite with current reporting systems and software.
- Duties will include manual labor; as to understand the proper use and techniques when using shovels, picks, hammers, etc.; know the proper Personal Protective Equipment required for use of the same.
- Understand the maintenance schedules and needs of all jobsite equipment.
- Create and submit incident reports utilizing current reporting systems and software, when merited and participate in Root Cause Analysis meetings of the same.
- While embedded with Survey and/or estimating, employee must display flexibility in being able to transition from office setting to field setting.
- Work with Project Engineer to learn all "daily reports" and how to verify their correctness.
- Provide assistance and review when called upon with Project Engineer weekly project schedule and supply scheduling coordinator with information updates.
- Perform as wide a range of the labor tasks associated with the craft being worked within to gain working and practical understanding of the work's demands.
- Participate and learn the process of change orders and estimating cost of change orders, to be learned from the Project Engineer.
- Create an atmosphere whereby personnel in the company are encouraged to improve their skills and maintain a high level of moral for themselves and other employees.
- Develop a cooperative working relationship with all management, seeking their comments and suggestions.
- Cooperate with the human resources department and risk management department. Being knowledgeable as to all aspects of EEO and safety responsibilities. Comply with these requirements and insist upon compliance among all subordinates.
- Assist Project Team when requested with monitoring costs and yield associated with the project and be alert to change in the relationship of the two, which might be an adverse indication and then bring to the attention of the Project Team.
- Assist Project Engineer when requested in regards to the Scheduling and Purchase of all material, and coordinate delivery to achieve the optimal use of material, labor, and equipment.
- Assure all work undertaken complies with all local laws, ordinance, and EPA regulations concerning the erection of structures and related activities.
- Maintain close contact and a good working relationship with the general public, engineers, inspectors, and customers to facilitate job progress, and to promote a positive company image; develop a courteous, and considerate attitude of assigned personal towards these groups.

KNOWLEDGE:
Broad knowledge of civil engineering and/or construction management; position requires the use of complicated drawings, and a variety of precision measuring instruments.
EXPERIENCE:
No experience is needed.
COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES:
Diversified duties, involving knowledge of related organization policies, and procedures. Position requires the use of judgment to analyze facts, and circumstances, and the determination of actions to be taken within limits of standard practice and established policies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Work under direction where defined objectives are established; plans and arranges work, referring only unusual cases to others.
CONFIDENTIAL DATA:
Position requires integrity and discretion to safeguard confidential data such as cost information, wage information, personnel information and/or actions, and other confidential information shared with supervisory personnel, where disclosure could have an adverse internal effect and/or a minor external effect.
PHYSICAL DEMAND: Occasional lifting or moving of average weight material around 50 pounds.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Position requires the ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, and grasp; position
requires standing, and walking for sustained periods of time; position requires ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word, and the ability to perceive sounds, and receive detailed information through oral communications.
MENTAL OR VISUAL DEMAND: Flow of work and character of work involve normal mental and visual attention, along with manual coordination.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Both inside and outside at various job sites and Wiregrass facilities.
