Martin Marietta is currently looking for a versatile mechanic at our underground Fort Dodge Mine. This position will perform preventative maintenance on all types of diesel-powered equipment, mechanical repairs on diesel-powered mobile equipment as well as aggregate plant equipment (loaders, dozers, crushers, conveyors, etc.) Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repairs of heavy equipment, rebuilds, removal and installation of mechanical parts.



Essential Functions



  • This position performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics and makes repairs on all on-site mobile and stationary equipment in the safest, most effective way possible to avoid downtime.

  • Performs diagnostic tasks to properly source parts and accurately repair all on-site mobile and stationary equipment.

  • Cleans, lubricates, and performs preventative maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.

  • Perform fabrication and metal work when necessary.

  • Dismantles and reassembles heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools, as needed.

  • Operates and inspects machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects.

  • Overhauls and tests machines or equipment to ensure operating efficiency.

  • Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, repairing and replacing damaged or worn parts.

  • Troubleshoots and rewires mobile equipment electrical systems.

  • Tests mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with the manufacturer's specifications.

  • Research, order, and maintain the inventory of parts responsibly for service and repairs.

  • Plan with management on services and repairs that will put equipment down during production hours.

  • Aides with the training of coworkers as needed.

  • Keep a clean and organized designated work area, staying in compliance with Martin Marietta and MSHA's policies.

  • Turn in paperwork daily with accurate hours and fuel usage, along with PM sheets.

  • This position will have an emphasis on tracking, performing, and closing out all PMs for mobile and stationary equipment on time.

  • Ability to navigate internal reporting tools on the computer/tablet.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position operates 100% at our Fort Dodge Mine. This job operates both underground and on the surface of a mining operation.



Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position that regularly requires long hours and weekend work. Typical schedule is Monday - Thursday 10:00 am - 9:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.



Required Education and Experience



  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Additional schooling/certifications a plus

  • 3-5 years of heavy equipment experience




Additional Eligibility Qualifications



  • Knowledge of Cat ET/SIS is helpful

  • Experience with Caterpillar, Komatsu, and John Deere quarry/construction equipment/diesel engine repairs.

  • Must be safety conscious, dependable, and motivated

  • Will take an active role in the plant safety initiatives
