Accessioning Archivist and Archivist

The Baylor University Libraries at Baylor University are seeking two Librarians who have experience as technical services archivists to ensure the timely discoverability of Baylors archival materials. These archivists, Accessioning Archivist and Lead Processing Archivist, will be student-focused, and people centered, fostering a strategic, collaborative, and productive work environment that ensures accessibility to rare and unique materials, making them available for research as quickly as possible. With a people-first mindset, the primary duties and responsibilities will focus on collections processing and ensuring their effective stewardship.

Qualifications

  • An ALA-accredited masters degree in library and information science with an emphasis or coursework in archival management, or an advanced degree with an emphasis in archives or an equivalent field.
  • At least one year of experience in archival processing, finding aid creation, and collection preparation.
  • Knowledge or experience in archival theory, methodology and practices, including descriptive systems and principles (DACS, EAD, MARC, appropriate thesauri & authority lists for archival description).
  • Experience with archival collection management systems and digital preservation frameworks (e.g. ArchivesSpace and Preservica).
  • Knowledge of aggregate platforms EAD-CPF, SNAC, NAFAN, and TARO and the processes that allow for integration to these platforms.
  • Ability to communicate and collaboratively work effectively in an academic setting, with demonstrated skills in oral communication, written communication, and interpersonal interaction.
  • Strong work ethic, project management skills, and service orientation.
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and initiative.
  • Demonstrated commitment to encouraging belonging and acceptance within the academic community.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists (CA).
  • Experience managing accessioning projects.
  • Proven success in leading and overseeing processing, particularly large-scale projects.
  • Demonstrated success in working independently with minimal supervision, measured by the number/volume of projects accurately completed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the University Archivist and Special Collections & Manuscript Archivist to establish baseline administrative, physical, and intellectual control over new and existing acquisitions, adhering to best practices. This includes inventorying recently acquired archival materials and backlogged items, as well as creating accession records within ArchivesSpace, following industry-standard accessioning and processing guidelines.
  • Processes collections, including accessioning, surveying, arranging and describing new and backlogged manuscript and archival materials in all formats. Uses applicable professional standards and best practices. Develops and maintains associated workflows.
  • Provides documentation, training, and guidance to employees processing collections.
  • Identifies and implements rehousing and preservation treatments as needed. Rehouses collection items into archival-safe storage, labels collections, assigns permanent location identifiers, to ensure proper management and accessibility.
  • Produces finding aids in ArchivesSpace and collaborates on MARC catalog records, utilizing knowledge of standards including DACS, EAD, MARC, and appropriate thesauri & authority lists for archival description.
  • Revises, edits, corrects, and migrates legacy finding aids to ArchivesSpace.
  • Facilitates and maintains email archiving processes and platforms.
  • Maintains the institutional web archiving program Archive-It.
  • Liaises with the University and Digital Archivist on the transfer and preservation of born-digital files.
  • Supports fundamental on-site operations and managing physical spaces.
  • Trains and supervises student assistants and interns.
  • Provides exhibition and collection digitization support.
  • Stays current with archival literature and participates in relevant conversations.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities through local and national conferences, meetings, and workshops and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Engages in library-wide initiatives through committees and task forces
  • Meets University and Library expectations for service and scholarship, including participation in the academic library community through research, presentations, and writing on topics related to areas of responsibility.
  • Assists with collaborative reference and reading room supervision across libraries as needed or assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of the Texas Collection & University Archives.
