Job Description:

This position will be a direct report to the President of Commercial Markets Division and will be responsible for the governance and oversight of the underwriting functions for all business units reporting into the Commercial Markets Division. This position will serve as the technical property and casualty underwriting expert and will be responsible for portfolio stewardship. This position will also be responsible for implementation, manage and oversight of the first line of defense audit process that supports the enterprises Three Lines of Defense program.


  • Drive the monitoring, analysis, research, and reporting of underwriting trends and best practices for new and existing Commercial Markets Insurance books of business and making recommendations as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive consensus on new product opportunities to grow the Commercial Markets Division
  • Act as the liaison for Commercial Markets with other stakeholders for new product opportunities.
  • Lead the identification, researching, and managing of new, problematic, or dislocated markets that are attractive due to ROE potential or distressed because of limited competition.
  • Implement and monitor Commercial Markets underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with AF Group Reinsurance to monitor risk tolerances and aggregates to ensure compliance with Commercial Markets and enterprise risk guidelines.
  • Serve as a technical expert and consultant on responses to questions and concerns from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent Commercial Markets and the enterprise on various committees and events as necessary both internally and externally.
  • Manage the 1st Line of Defense to ensure Underwriting Standards & Practices and Compliance are consistent with enterprise best practices and workflows.
  • Work closely with actuarial, reinsurance and business unit leaders to implement and influence pricing positions and underwriting risk appetite.
  • Assess training needs for underwriters and collaborate with other stakeholders to design and implement training sessions for field staff.
  • Collaborate with Specialty Lines Division and Corporate Underwriting where applicable to ensure consistency in areas that are considered standard practices.


EDUCATION


  • Bachelor's degree required


EXPERIENCE


  • Ten years of experience.
  • Five years of leadership experience.
  • Influenced company's processes and procedures for determining and implementing pricing.
  • Determined prices for various products.
  • Negotiated and priced large, complex accounts.
  • Developed unique policy features for a customized product.
  • Compared features of many competitors to improve the products offerings.
  • Contributed to development of new product; and led projects through product development cycles, deliverables and time frames working with related departments and work groups.


QUALIFICATIONS


  • Expert knowledge of the underwriting discipline and evaluation of underwriting performance based on financial analysis including rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and managerial level skills in managing ambiguous situations and issues. Ability to diagnose and develop recommendations to solve unique business unit and customer problems.
  • Knowledge of the property and casualty industry and practices with respects to legal, regulatory, and administrative procedures; tools and techniques for assessing exposure, risks, trends, pricing, and portfolio analysis at various levels.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting and actuarial concepts and practices as applied to commercial multiline insurance; understands financial and actuarial tools and standards; can access and understand major corporate financial reports; can describe key issues of various financial units; and is aware of financial goals and measures of key competitors.
  • Knowledge of effective rate reviews/rate changes. Effective analysis of state rate needs, recommendations, ability to gain consensus and implementation within responsible departments and operating units.
  • Knowledge of practices, tools, and techniques to attract, retain and service target customers, maximizing company profit objectives.
  • Knowledge of policy language and endorsements to tailor new or manuscript coverages to meet customer's needs.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance activities, processes, tools, and considerations.
  • Demonstrated drive, determination, and persistence to achieve annual revenue targets.
  • Action-oriented approach to solving business problems.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of trust through demonstrated personal integrity, ethics, and a commitment to doing the right thing.

Pay Range - Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate's skills and professional experience, geographic location, market, and other potential factors. It is not standard practice for an offer to be at or near the top of the range, and therefore a reasonable estimate for this role is between $147,500 and $247,100 (M4A).
