Under the direction of the Food Service Administrator, the Dining Service Area Supervisor oversees the daily operations of a designated food service unit within Dining Services. This role involves supervising food preparation, service, and maintenance activities while ensuring adherence to safety and sanitation standards. The supervisor manages and coordinates the work of student and Civil Service employees, assists with scheduling, and supports training initiatives to maintain high standards of service and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and coordinate the operation of a food service unit, including food preparation, set-up, service, and clean-up.
Direct the work activities of student and Civil Service employees, providing guidance and training as needed.
Ensure compliance with safety and sanitation procedures to promote a safe working environment.
Assist with the preparation of work schedules, making adjustments as necessary to meet operational needs.
Participate in food preparation and serving activities, ensuring quality and presentation standards are met.
Maintain accurate records related to food production, inventory, and employee schedules.
Assist in training new employees on job duties, safety protocols, and customer service standards.
Requisition food and supplies to maintain inventory levels and support operational requirements.
Foster positive customer relations by addressing concerns and maintaining a welcoming environment.
Coordinate daily activities with other food service units to optimize efficiency and support departmental goals.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Three (3) years (36 months) of food service work experience in an institutional or commercial setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Supervisory ability and experience.
Ability to pass food handlers examination.
Knowledge of sanitation practices and procedures and possession of Illinois Department of Public Health Food Service Management Sanitation Certificate.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
