Position Description:

The Department of Dance Performance & Choreography at Spelman College welcomes applications for the position of Associate Professor of Dance, with an opportunity to also serve as department chair.



About the Division of the Arts: The Department of Dance Performance and Choreography is a member of the Division of the Arts, whose mission is to encourage discovery, creativity, and scholarship for talented, aspiring artists. Distinguished by a liberal arts curriculum and interdisciplinary approach, our programs provide a solid foundation for further study and a successful career. The Division commits to preparing the next generation of individuals from the African diaspora, particularly African Americans, as artist and thought leaders in theater and performance, dance, art and visual culture, and music through interdisciplinary academic educational experiences and engagement.



About the Department of Dance Performance & Choreography: The Department of Dance Performance & Choreography is a critical and creative thinking laboratory that nurtures women of the African Diaspora. Students investigate intersections of experimental creative practices, cultural discourse, and technology. Our faculty are working across the areas of contemporary dance; African Diasporic movement practices; immersive and community-centered participatory practice, innovative technology, and social justice.

We seek applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate Professor to begin January 2026. The successful candidate will be a scholar/educator/practitioner with interdisciplinary educational leadership experience. Candidates with extensive knowledge of, and experience in, Black/African Diasporic and global dance expertise within the African Diasporic framework and fields with substantive publications, presentations, and/or choreographic and performance work. The successful candidate will embody a teacher-scholar model, with applicable leadership experience to facilitate the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department in building and facilitating the educational, learning, and practitioner experiences for students and faculty within the department. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to working with women and underrepresented students through teaching, mentoring, and research are especially encouraged to apply.The selected candidate will join our department in the newly minted, state-of-the-art Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for the Arts & Innovation where we integrate choreographic practice, emergent creative technologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration.To apply, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, research statement, statement of leadership philosophy, writing sample, performance/ media url, and the names/contact information for three references.
