Physical Requirements Standing for long periods of time. Lift or push boxes up to 25 lbs. safely with assistance, if needed. Independently navigate facility and grounds. Safe operation of equipment as directed.
Shift Working hours Between Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.
37.5 hours per week.
Job Summary The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) is seeking a safety-conscious and self-motivated employee to contribute to a grant-funded project preserving oil and gas well cuttings for use in research. This position starts on June 1, 2025. The position will last until May 31, 2028, and is eligible for healthcare benefits. This posting will stay open until it is filled.

What you’ll do:

  • Use a pallet jack to maneuver boxes through the storage facility for analysis
  • Preserve and document oil and gas well cutting sets for research
  • Identify, label and re-house oil and gas well cutting sets with a team
  • Use equipment to wash samples from the field for archival storage and research use
  • Write and transcribe notes by hand and in a database
  • Compose and maintain project notes for analysis
  • Follow best practices for preservation and storage of geologic samples

You’ll be a great fit if:

  • You have high attention to detail and can spot minute differences between data
  • You’ve got a geology or earth science background
  • You care about findability and preservation of research data
  • Your written and verbal communication skills are clear (including handwriting)
  • You enjoy working on a small team
  • You have (or desire) training with pallet jacks and industrial equipment
  • You are familiar with geologic samples and desire to learn more about oil and gas industry in Kentucky and geologic analysis techniques

Where you’ll work:

KGS Earth Analysis Research Library is a rock, mineral and soil analysis and storage facility located at 2500 Research Park Drive, Lexington, KY. This facility is not located on UK’s main campus.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Attention to detail, organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills, teamwork, must have legible handwriting
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? No
Preferred Education/Experience Associates in Earth Science or Archeology. Warehouse experience including operating stock pickers, forklifts, etc. is a plus.
