We are seeking a Finishing Process Engineer to join our edge trimming and slitting team at a state-of-the-art steel flat-rolled product facility in Starkville, MS, just outside of Mississippi State University & the University of Alabama.
You will be responsible for establishing edge trimming and slitting line operational parameters to enhance performance, reliability, productivity, and quality consistency. During commissioning, acceptance testing, and production ramp-up, you will serve as the Finishing Subject Matter Expert for Slitting and Edge Trimming lines across Can, Automotive, and General Industry products to ensure successful product qualification..
Responsibilities:
Review and approve product finishing capabilities including Slitting, Edge Trimming, and Packaging based on customer inquiries and orders
Apply working knowledge of sheet metal slitting lines and key components including upper/lower knives, down-holders, rake angles, and related systems
Enhance edge quality of coil products, focusing on consistency, cost-effectiveness, productivity, safety, and setup time reduction
Collaborate with Operators and Process Metallurgists to achieve precise cutting of sheet into specific width strips without edge deformation or burrs while minimizing scrap
Leverage experience with automatic slitting adjustment systems for precise blade positioning and clearance in high-speed, high-volume coil production
Analyze process data using appropriate problem-solving techniques to identify root causes and implement practical production solutions
Provide technical leadership for coil-to-coil finishing during product trials in partnership with Process Metallurgists, Engineers, and Supervisors
Work with cross-functional teams to analyze finished products, identify surface and metallurgical criteria, and support root cause analysis and resolution
Develop best practices for coil-to-coil finishing to improve production efficiency, minimize rework, and increase yield for on-time delivery
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or similar engineering discipline; or Associate degree with relevant experience
1-5 years of experience in aluminum sheet production and finishing
Knowledge of quality systems including ISO, IATF, and other applicable standards
Demonstrated process development experience with edge trimming, slitting, and coil finishing applications
