Job Description:

The Position
Incumbents work under the direction of the Chief Security Officer or designee providing maximum protection and safety for residents, patients, County staff, and the public while also securing the property and grounds of the Douglas County Health Center (DCHC).
Essential Functions


  • Patrol and monitor DCHC campus and other assigned properties to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized intruders; identify potential safety hazards and security threats; and notify proper authority of any potential threats or risk exposure.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.

  • Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies, and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.

  • Provide assistance to residents/patients and the public and control situations avoiding unnecessary force.

  • Respond to all emergency and medical codes/calls and crisis.

  • Assist psychiatric patient admissions searching, restraining, and providing patients security until completion of a physical and mental assessment.

  • Monitor alarm panels, conduct monthly checks of panic alarms and fire equipment, and participate in fire/disaster drills.

  • Monitor parking areas, enforce parking regulations, and verify emergency vehicles have clear and unobstructed access to entrances.

  • Maintain a professional approach when interacting with residents/patients, campus staff, and visitors demonstrating a positive public image.

  • Investigate and document illegal activity or accidents.

  • Create backup files of illegal activity captured on security camera footage.

  • Maintain records and prepare incident reports (e.g. motor vehicle database, logbooks, resident records, resident pictorial database) and other documents.

  • Periodically review the Patient Rights Manual remaining current on changes.

  • Operate a motor vehicle safely when required to travel on County business.

  • Report to work at assigned location with regular, consistent attendance.

  • Perform other duties as directed and assigned.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement or security involving public contact required.

  • Completion of training in Psychiatric/Behavioral/Emergency (Code 55), Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) and Crisis Prevention (CPI) within the first six (6) months of employment and retrain each year required.

  • Experience in mental health care facilities preferred.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office software preferred.

  • Valid driver's license at the time of hire and throughout employment required.

  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal records check, post-offer drug screen and physical assessment required.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Work typically performed indoors in an office setting and on campus grounds. When outdoors, there is full exposure to the elements and construction hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to biohazards, electric and/or mechanical hazards and potential injury from combative/abusive patients. Noise level is usually moderate. Work hours are assigned specific shifts; however, schedule may vary (e.g. days, evenings, weekends, holidays, extra shifts, emergency call-in). Work may be stressful when managing changing and multiple priorities, dealing with competing needs and/or time constraints, and uncooperative or irate individuals.

  • Work requires some physical activity including extended periods of sitting and standing, frequent walking, and occasional balancing, kneeling, bending, and reaching. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.

  • Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
