Summary: The Department Manager, Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for managing and directing the overall performance of a specified unit/section within an HIM department, managing an HIM department in its entirety, or managing multiple HIM sites depending on the size and scope of the sites. The HIM Manager coordinates HIM Operations for at least three hospitals across a multi-facility integrated healthcare system, ensuring that health information supports patient care, business operations, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities:
Staff Management: Recruit, hire, train, schedule, manage payroll, take disciplinary action, conduct performance evaluations, orient new hires, assign work, and provide counseling in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Performance and Compliance: Ensure department performance aligns with productivity, quality, and compliance expectations by staying informed on current health information regulations, monitoring performance, implementing standards and programs, compiling reports, and participating in external reviews.
Daily Operations: Oversee the daily operations of HIM functions, including staffing, system maintenance, policy and procedure updates, workflow coordination, and ensuring timely availability of medical record information.
Technology Administration: Serve as an expert user/administrator of Health Information technology systems, address functionality issues, collaborate with healthcare team members to resolve system issues, and lead or assist with system implementations and upgrades.
Resource and Advisor: Provide guidance to local hospital leaders and medical staff on health information issues, establish workflows for medical record completion and content, participate in committees or teams, and serve as an onsite HIM internship instructor for university students.
Communication and Reporting: Prepare, analyze, and distribute reports, make presentations to share Health Information outcomes, manage labor and expense budgets, and assist with preparing capital requests.
Leadership and Project Management: Assist leadership and local administration with assessing, investigating, recommending, and following up on new technology, projects, goals, targets, and business initiatives.
Additional Duties: Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in HIM with RHIA credential preferred; other Bachelor's Degrees with at least 5 years of HIM Department experience considered; Associate's Degree in HIM with RHIT credential and management experience also considered.
Knowledge: HIM operations; hospital EMRs/EHR and billing systems/applications; HIPAA regulations and guidelines; revenue cycle operations; Medical Staff structure, Rules & Regulations and Bylaws; Quality & Safety standards.
Skills: Data analysis and trending; written, verbal, and interpersonal communication; performance monitoring; managing, leading, coaching, and mentoring HIM associates; proficiency in Microsoft Office; managing multiple projects and timelines.
Credentials: RHIA or RHIT credentials required.
