Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Designs, prototypes, and implements visualization systems
Maintains visualization systems including projectors, tiled video walls, large format displays, direct view LED displays, visualization PCs
Performs regular hardware diagnostics and upgrades to keep systems performing optimally
Monitors system performance and performs preventative maintenance
Maintains lab equipment, including unstaffed workstations, camera systems, control systems (Extron, Bright Sign, etc.), 3D printers, xR headsets, etc
Maintains servers and network information: Linux servers running on a VM cluster, SSL certificate maintenance, DNS registrations (coordinated with DNS administrators)
Designs objects, scenes, and equipment to support visualization efforts: Modeling for VR scenes, Modeling for 3D printing, Lighting control for image capture via cameras, multi-camera capture systems. Promotes knowledge and leverages info-sharing opportunities for internal team members and external clients
Ensures system compatibility with various visualization software, such as Unity, Unreal Engine, ParaView, or open-source visualization tools
Ensures seamless integration between input devices (haptic controllers, motion tracking, etc.) and visualization systems
Evaluates and recommends new hardware/software solutions for future projects
Attends conferences and collaborates with other academic institutions on visualization best practices
Supports faculty, researchers, and students by managing and maintaining high-performance
Responsibilities will often involve maintaining lab infrastructure, assisting with research projects, and providing technical support for immersive and data-driven visualization applications
General Responsibilities
Designs, develops, and implements advanced systems that adhere to university policies and standards
Evaluates, monitors, and assesses current systems to design and develop system updates/modifications and/or to resolve issues; provides a senior point of escalation in regard to complex and difficult system performance issues
Makes recommendations to improve, as well as provides, bug reporting and identification, test case authoring and refinement, automation scripts, and works closely with other technical teams to resolve highly complex and difficult problems
Reviews work and often provides guidance to junior peers
Leads in establishing metrics and determining systems configuration(s) to ensure optimum performance and security in accordance with strategy and operational goals
Analyzes capacity data and leads in the development of capacity plans
Ensures proper documentation of systems infrastructure design decisions, issues/resolutions, as well as leads service disaster recovery planning
Collaborates with systems professionals on other teams and across the university to analyze/evaluate new capabilities and emerging technologies that could improve university systems performance
Researches and stays abreast of current higher education systems engineering trends
Stays up-to-date and makes recommendations to improve systems engineering best practices, tools, and approaches
Serves as project leader

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
