Compensation

The base hourly rate for this position is $24.76.

This is a production position with supervisory responsibilities. Position works to ensure safety, quality and production targets are met. Working with plant management team at all levels within the organization to support the four Johns Manville core values: People, Passion, Performance, and Protection. This position trains, fills in for and directs activities of other production workers.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Supports and promotes safe practices and environmental commitments in alignment with company commitments, policies, and compliance requirements.
  • Assigns tasks to employees and actively supervises to ensure completion. Includes training, planning, assigning, and directing work. Fills in for Supervisor when Supervisor is absent.
  • Assumes responsibility for and understands all operating systems on the Board Line from the batch plant through automatic packaging, including stretch wrapping, re-feed , and environmental control equipment. Must be able to operate all equipment in such a way as to keep it in good operating condition.
  • Makes adjustments required to maintain the process within allowable limits on such critical elements as fiber quality, density, binder content, dedusting oil, collection width, oven temperatures, conveyor synchronization, product dimensions, roll securement and roll dimensions.
  • Sets clearances and positions for seal rolls, side rolls, oven flights, band saws, slitters, encasing conveyors, choppers, and automatic packaging equipment to control product, package, and unit dimensions.
  • Trouble-shoots and corrects various problems relative to quality and operating difficulties. May temporarily take over the duties of any crewmember to overcome these difficulties.
  • Monitors product quality, obtains samples, checks density, determines edge trim %, monitors packaging, labeling. Performs Q.C. audits and enters data on the computer.
  • Collects and records process-control data for SPC, VRT or other purposes using manual or computerized systems.
  • Communicates quality and quantity performance and product change information to the crew and Shift Supervisor.
  • Changes machine from one product to another by updating the density-monitoring equipment, computing the new machine speed, adjusting necessary equipment, directing crew and performing any other duties necessary to minimize losses, in-line blowing wool, and scrap. Requires planning, preparation, coordination and walking the change completely through the machine.
  • Shuts down and starts up machine for periodic cleanouts, rebuilds and maintenance. Works with crew during these periods as required.
  • Understands procedures and steps to be taken during emergencies such as power failures, process fires, equipment malfunctions and product jams. Requires coordination on 800-foot long machines producing up to 12,000 lbs/hr.
  • Observes, directs, assists and instructs crewmembers on their jobs and provides relief as necessary. Helps settle work assignment problems as they occur.
  • Watches for equipment malfunctions and notifies supervision and Shift Maintainers for corrective action.
  • Monitor department performance and take action to correct target misses.
  • Assists and guides operators with problem solving and root cause identification.
  • Starts machine and observes operation to detect malfunctions of machine.
  • Stops machine and reports malfunction to supervisor.
  • Ensure quality standards are met by completing and documenting quality checks. Make necessary corrective actions to the process to ensure specifications are met.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely production reporting including re-work, finished goods and scrap.
  • Ensure that product is packaged according to packaging standards.
  • Completes process, quality and all other audits as assigned.
  • Ensure finished product quantities are counted, recorded and reconciled.
  • Identifies equipment issues and generates work orders.
  • Label correct information on container such as date codes or product size.
  • Always use safe work practices, follows all safety rules and procedures, immediately reports any hazardous conditions, and fully participate in safety program.
  • Perform safety observations and complete training assignments.
  • Wears all personal protective equipment as required by management, including but not limited to all or some of the following; protective shoes, glasses, ear plugs, bump cap or hard hat, dust mask or respirator.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, email)

Work Environment

This job is in an industrial, manufacturing environment. The job requires working frequently around and with heavy machinery with moving mechanical parts, industrial ovens, and mobile equipment. The environment is not climate controlled and employees must be able to work in environments that may be extremely hot and humid or cold depending upon the operation and the season. Walking surfaces can be wet, dusty, and uneven. Areas of the building where work must be done have high noise levels, vibration, and/or fumes. Some working areas contain the presence of airborne particles which can irritate the skin or eyes. The manufacturing process involves toxic or caustic chemicals. Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment which includes steel toed shoes, ear protection, eye protection and in certain areas may be required to where dust masks, respirators, gloves or head protection.
