Job Summary The Opportunity
The University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine seeks a visionary Chief for the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine with a record of achievement in academic medicine in internal medicine and relevant specialty area(s). Exceptional accomplishments as a clinician and academician will prepare the candidate for success in guiding a busy clinical practice and supporting growing academic careers. The Division Chief reports directly to and serves at the pleasure of the Department Chair and collaborates closely with other leaders across UK HealthCare and the College of Medicine.

The predominant criteria for appointment as chief include emotional intelligence, and a proven ability to deliver excellent patient care while training future leaders in pulmonary, critical care, sleep medicine, and internal medicine. The successful candidate will be a prominent academic leader with an established record of excellence in clinical care, research, clinical education, and mentorship.

UK seeks a leader who has a demonstrated commitment to the tri-partite academic mission, the ability to build and lead a diverse group and work with hospital partners in a collaborative approach, success in promoting or producing scholarship and funding, and the ability to mentor faculty and trainees. Expertise as a Division or Section Chief, Medical Director, or Program Director, or an established leader within a national society or medical journal, or a track record of securing extramural funding or leading clinical trials is highly sought.

The successful candidate should demonstrate strong leadership skills as a listener, decision-maker, humanist, and an effective advocate for the faculty, the division, and the department. The candidate will have collaborative initiatives; they will demonstrate integrity and foster the trust of colleagues and the broader university faculty. The successful applicant will be an effective communicator.

The division is poised to achieve regional and national recognition in clinical care delivery, medical education and research. It serves an integral role in a vibrant and robust academic environment within UK HealthCare, which brings state-of-the-art facilities and technology to the Lexington, Kentucky campus and broader region as UK moves toward its goal of becoming a top 25 medical center. UK is constructing a new hospital tower, featuring a new bronchoscopy suite, to bring total beds on the main campus to 1,500 by 2029.

The incoming Director will lead a pre-eminent team that includes regionally and nationally recognized specialists in pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pulmonary hypertension, lung cancer, sleep medicine, clinical investigation, and basic science, among others.

Position Summary
The Chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division will make vital contributions to implementing the organization’s most critical strategies and will strive to achieve excellence in a full range of quality measurements. Leading across all missions, the Chief will support the growth of clinical activities, medical education, and research. The Chief serves at the pleasure of the Department Chair, and collaborates closely with other leaders across UK HealthCare, Markey Cancer Center and the College of Medicine. Planning and alignment of future growth and recruitment to accomplish department goals will be integral to the duties of the Chief of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with leadership inside and outside of the department to create an infrastructure comprised of high-quality clinical care that incorporates scholarly and educational activities.
  • Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with clinical leadership, including physician groups, patients, and external entities to foster opportunities for revenue enhancement, enhanced customer service, and to positively impact core clinical measures.
  • Responsible for quality management and provider performance, including physicians, advanced practice providers, fellows, and staff for the Division.
  • Review and report on provider performance quarterly.
  • Recruit and mentor those of character into a culture of respect, kindness, and professionalism, where teamwork, innovation, and work satisfaction thrive.
  • Develop a Division Balanced Scorecard in collaboration with the Department Chair Administrative team.
  • Support the Division’s research promotion and development in accordance with the Department’s metrics.

  • Strong clinical skills and ability to continue to practice their field of expertise while serving as Chief; should have skills in collaboration and the ability to learn and share
