The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing cost estimates and detailed quantity take-offs for construction projects. They evaluate project plans, specifications, and other documents to calculate material, labor, and equipment costs. The Estimator works closely with architects, engineers, subcontractors, and other construction professionals to ensure accurate and competitive bids are prepared.
Key Responsibilities:
Review project documents: Analyze and review blueprints, technical specifications, and scope of work documents to understand the requirements of the project.
Prepare cost estimates: Develop detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs. Ensure accuracy in estimating quantities and costs for all aspects of the project.
Cost analysis: Evaluate and analyze construction costs and compare historical data for similar projects. Identify cost-saving opportunities and potential risks.
Vendor and subcontractor coordination: Obtain quotes from subcontractors and suppliers for materials and services. Evaluate proposals and ensure that they meet project requirements and budgets.
Preparation of bids: Prepare and submit competitive and comprehensive bids for projects. Collaborate with project managers and senior staff to finalize bid submissions.
Site visits and assessments: Visit project sites to assess existing conditions, conduct measurements, and identify any potential challenges that could affect project costs.
Collaboration with project team: Work closely with architects, engineers, project managers, and other team members to ensure that estimates align with project goals and specifications.
Risk management: Identify and evaluate potential risks associated with the project and include contingency plans in the cost estimates.
Maintain records: Keep accurate and organized records of estimates, bids, and relevant documents for future reference.
Monitor and update estimates: Regularly review and update cost estimates as the project progresses, ensuring that any changes or unforeseen conditions are accounted for.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
Experience: 3+ years of experience in construction estimating, with a strong understanding of construction processes, materials, and industry standards.
Technical proficiency: Familiarity with construction estimating software (e.g., ProEst, Buildertrend, Sage, or similar tools) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong analytical skills: Ability to analyze project plans and specifications to accurately estimate costs.
Attention to detail: Excellent attention to detail and precision when estimating quantities, materials, and labor costs.
Communication skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with clients, subcontractors, and team members.
Time management: Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of construction codes and standards: Understanding of local building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with specific construction types (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial).
