Job Description The Sr. Systems Engineer (Electronics), Contractor is responsible for supporting Rheem's control development in heat pump, electric, and/or gas water heater product lines through the Advanced Technology Integration organization. This role also plays a critical part supporting our R&D and manufacturing partners.
This position will serve our Enterprise Division, located in Montgomery, AL (Hybrid). Responsibilities As the Sr. Systems Engineering (Electronics), Contractor, you will be using your technical and leadership skills to drive and develop our unique electronic control systems.

General Role Responsibilities And Tasks
System Architecture and Design: Support the design of an electronic controller application, ensuring robust, common solutions across Water Heater and Air Conditioning products with the support of our Hardware, Software and R&D organizations.
Work Product Reviews: Overseeing system work product reviews and ensuring the closure of action items before the release of design documentation and work products.
Collaborative Engagement: Actively engaging with software, hardware, test, and product development teams throughout the product life cycle, ensuring seamless integration of system engineering work products.
Requirements Definition: Defining, documenting, and updating controller system requirements and verification plans in collaboration with various teams. System Architecture: Defining and documenting controller system architecture, including key functional blocks, inputs, outputs, and interfaces.
Verification Excellence: Creating and maintaining a controller traceability matrix, mapping controller requirements to associated verification activities and results, and actively participating in verification activities.
Product Design Support: Participating in product design reviews to guarantee that control systems meet hardware and software feature requirements.
Manufacturing Support: Assisting manufacturing engineering and suppliers by contributing to the development of product manufacturing test procedures and control documentation.
Participate in developing system engineering processes and quality criteria.
Customer Support/Service Collaboration: Collaborating closely with the customer service team to provide support for product training and ensuring customer satisfaction.
Work Product This role will require the development, review and publication of Rheem's Systems Engineering Standard Work Products as well as the ability to review, comment on and support Work Products from our partner organizations. You will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of:
System Functional Specifications - "What" we are trying to implement, providing the Technical & Functional guidance needed by our Hardware, Software and Cloud teams.
Functional System / Block Diagrams - Level 0 / Top Level to Level 2 / Physical Design, used to describe and align the Design and Interactions of our Products
Data Flow Diagrams - Describing the interactions of key system components, including but not limited to operating modes, critical I/Os and algorithms. This will be supported by team members from Hardware, Software and R&D.
Functionality Requirements - Describing the product functionality needs at critical product milestones, such as Engineering Builds and in Field Trials.
Test Specifications / Plans - Describing the Board, Test Bench, Systems Level, & End of Line testing expectations for our controls on a given product. Supports the development of Contract Manufacturer Test Requirements and Plans.
Conduct testing per published Test Specifications / Plans & publish results in a formal Test Report.
Traceability Matrix - Used to ensure full coverage of Product and Business Requirements through testing.
This role may require the design and development of a Control level test bench, general support of laboratory testing and interaction with our Manufacturing, Service and Support teams in the development of your product.

Qualifications To excel in this role and make a significant impact, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical discipline)
7+ years of experience (10+ preferred) in the development of products with embedded microprocessor-based controls

Able to work with cross-functional teams (e.g., product managers, engineers, business teams) and external subject matter experts
Applied Knowledge: Experience with electronic controls development which include electronics design and/or embedded software development is required. Experience developing products for Water Heating and/or HVAC equipment is highly valuable.
Engineering Expertise: Proficiency in System Requirements Documentation, Requirements Allocation, Requirements Traceability, and Test Case development and execution in Jama or similar Requirements Management Tool.
Familiarity with Functional Safety standards (e.g., IEC 61508, ISO26262) or Agency Certification Requirements (e.g., UL 60730, UL 174, etc.).
Quality Assurance: Experience with product and component level FMEAs and electronics failure analysis.
Experience with Product Lifecycle Management, demonstrating a track record of managing version controlled systems development over the entire product lifecycle.
Technical Competence: Ability to read, understand, and implement technical procedures and government regulations, as well as interpret a variety of schematic, electrical, and mechanical diagrams.
Collaborative Skills: Proficiency in working with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, business teams, and external subject matter experts.
Passion for Innovation: A deep passion for building and owning innovative, customer-facing services/products.
Communication Skills: Exceptional presentation and communication skills.
Technical Proficiency: Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of relevant software such as the MS Office Suite, Jama (or similar requirements tracking tools), and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools.
Preferred Qualifications While the qualifications mentioned above are essential, the following additional qualifications and experiences will make you stand out as a top candidate:
A Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
Industry-Specific Experience: Experience in HVAC or Water Heating applications is strongly preferred.
3+ years of successful embedded system engineering project management.
Knowledge of one or more of: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular communication, Ethernet, IoT
Test Development: Familiarity with Test Development for Electronic Products.
Six Sigma Certification: Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt Certification.
Quality and Reliability: Experience in Quality and Reliability aspects of product development.
Automated Test Development Experience
Project Management: Project management experience is a plus.
