Job Summary: The Sub Grade & Base Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of base construction operations on heavy civil construction projects. This role ensures that work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, schedules, and budgets. The Superintendent plays a key leadership role in coordinating crews, subcontractors, and equipment involved in sub grade stabilization, final grading, placement of Cement Treated Base and aggregate base courses in the preparation for roadways, highways, runways, and other infrastructure projects.

Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities:


  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily sub grade and base operations including dirt stabilization, final grading and base placement installation.

  • Ensure adherence to project specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, surveyors, and other superintendents to ensure project alignment and continuity.

  • Monitor production schedules and adjust field activities to maintain or improve progress.

  • Manage and lead field personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.

  • Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of equipment and materials.

  • As needed, oversee subcontractor performance and coordinate their activities with in-house crews

  • Maintain accurate documentation including daily logs, progress reports, safety records, and materials usage.

  • Participate in project meetings and communicate project status, issues, and needs to leadership.

  • Proactively identify and resolve field issues to minimize project delays and costs.

Qualifications:


  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in heavy civil construction, specifically in base preparation and roadway construction.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant technical training or degree preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of base construction methods, materials, and equipment.

  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting civil plans, specifications, and staking/layout.

  • Proficiency in productivity tracking and reporting.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Proven commitment to jobsite safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and travel as needed.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment:


  • Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, walk, stand; Able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
