Position Description:

Position Overview

Flaggers work on construction sites to control traffic. They work along roads and highways and traffic flow through construction zones, despite a shutdown of lanes.


Salary Range:

$15.00-$25.00 per hour


Primary Duties

  • Set up each section of a work zone by setting equipment, such as barricades and signs in place.
  • Using sign, hand, and flag signals directs driver to stop and explains reason for halting vehicle therefore preventing accidents and injury to workers.
  • Performs basic road repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Warn construction workers when approaching vehicle fails to heed signals to prevent accident and injury to workers.
  • Direct movement of traffic through site, using sign, hand, and flag signals.
  • Reports safety hazards and traffic problems.
  • Responds to emergencies as directed and performs tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies.
  • Records license number of traffic control violators for police.

Position Requirements:

Qualifications & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • OSHA 10 card (must be obtained prior to beginning work)
  • Valid driver’s license that complies with Fleet Safety Program
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Must be willing and able to travel out of town frequently if necessary.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Flaggers are regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; see; talk or hear.
  • Flaggers are frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Flaggers are also occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.
  • Flaggers must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, sometimes in excess of 12 hours per day, often in adverse conditions including heat, wind, rain and possibly cold.
  • Must be able to lift and carry road signs and tools continuously without assistance.
  • Flaggers work on a team to keep traffic moving and must be able to work and communicate with others positively and clearly.
  • Flaggers need to communicate clearly.
  • Strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance. May be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; possibly high, precarious places. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
