Sr Assistant Dean for Research, Learning and Access Services

Open Rank (Associate or Full)

Salary: Open rank (Associate or Full Librarian) with an anticipated salary range of $136,800-$156,000, which is inclusive of an administrative stipend, which is renewable at established intervals.

About the Binghamton University Libraries:

The Binghamton University Libraries provides research collections in electronic (over 2 million and growing) and print (1.7 million items) formats with an extensive array of databases and e-packages (over 400), archival and distinctive printed materials in Special Collections as well as services with a variety of student-centered study spaces. With three public locations (Glenn G. Bartle Library, Science Library and the University Downtown Center Library) and an off-site Collections Management Facility, our aim is to provide access to primary research materials and resources befitting an R1 research institution.

Binghamton University Libraries welcomes applications for the new position of Sr. Assistant Dean for Research, Learning and Access Services. The Sr. Assistant Dean leads goal setting, planning, prioritization, design, and monitoring of workflows across a broad portfolio of research, learning, and access services. This position oversees five major library units, builds relationships with internal and external partners, and advocates for new tools and procedures to improve efficiency and service to library users. Reporting directly to the Dean of Libraries, the Sr. Assistant Dean is a key member of the senior administrative team, collaborating on strategic and operational goals and managing change. The role supervises two directors and provides strategic direction and support to more than 30 staff in areas such as digital scholarship, liaison services, special collections, information literacy teaching, and access services.

The Sr. Assistant Dean demonstrates excellent leadership skills, including excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, to establish and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues in an environment where flexibility and collaboration are essential. A commitment to providing excellent service, a demonstrated ability to develop and sustain productive partnerships within and across organizations, budgeting, and creativity in solving problems and creating efficiencies is expected of this position. The position must maintain a deep knowledge of current issues and best practices for developing managing research services, as well as awareness of major trends in user services, higher education, and research libraries.

Librarianship

Oversees the activities of directors over two departments and four library units, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.

Ensure unit, department and divisional goals align with library and university strategic initiatives. Actively participate in strategic planning and relevant assessment activities.

Advocate for, lead, and support the development and implementation of innovative tools and workflows to meet internal and external user needs and support Libraries' mission.

Consult closely with relevant personnel on budgeting for staffing needs and resources to meet current and emerging needs in support of growing research services and initiatives.

Represent libraries and the University as assigned to relevant institutional, regional, and national organizations and initiatives.

Provide direction for and publicly represent relevant services and decisions, especially regarding high-visibility commitments and projects.

Strategically deploy and promote the development of relevant expertise across Libraries units to enhance research and circulation services and end-user experience.

Provide leadership for the scholarly and instructional functions of the University Libraries, guiding and advancing library programs to support student success for undergraduate and graduate learners.

Ensure best practices are employed for nurturing, growing, and increasing usage of the Libraries' special collections and archival materials.

Collaboratively facilitate the development of academic and research collaborations with faculty across academic units at Binghamton, ensuring the alignment of library services with academic needs across the university.

Develop and maintain knowledge about new and emerging technologies and trends impacting research library services and collections.

Actively participate on the Executive Leadership Team and Dean's Library Council; actively aligns with and positively supports the priorities, goals, and direction collaboratively set by leadership to ensure organizational success; actively puts the Libraries' best interest above that of the division.

Participate in a work culture that promotes diversity and inclusion and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.

Scholarship

Contributes significantly to the profession to meet the Libraries' standards of scholarship.


Service

Serve as a leader and/or active member of library teams, task forces and committees.

Participate in and represent Binghamton Libraries in local, regional, and national professional activities.


Requirements

Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library or information science program or an ALA-approved foreign equivalent.

At least 5 years of professional experience in academic libraries, including at least 3 years in a supervisory and personnel management role.

Experience managing projects, workflows, and deadlines in a collegial, complex and changing environment.

Experience making public presentations and communicating complex ideas.

Excellent organizational skills.

Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate new services initiatives.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to collect, analyze, utilize and communicate data for informed decision-making.

Record of scholarly activity, such as presentations, publications and/or grants.

Preferred

Experience managing, and evolving, public-facing library services.

Experience facilitating team communications with staff, external organizations, project partners, and consortial constituents.

Experience successfully advocating for, and managing, resources.

Experience navigating policies, procedures and decision making across a complex, distributed environment.
