Job Summary The Department of Modern & Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Hebrew & Jewish Studies to begin August 1st, 2025. This is a full-time, non-tenure-eligible faculty position in the temporary title series with an appointment period of one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year. This position has a teaching load of three courses in the fall, and three courses in the spring. Candidates must demonstrate language competency in Biblical Hebrew to teach elementary-level language courses. Knowledge of other Second Temple Period languages such as Greek or Aramaic is also highly desirable.

The successful candidate will have scholarly expertise in Second Temple Judaism, as well as Greco-Roman and/or Late Antique Jewish life. Candidates should be specialists in Jewish culture during any period between 500 B.C.E and 500 C.E. but applicants from other Jewish Studies backgrounds who can also teach in this area will be considered. This position is expected to teach a broad range of courses, including Introduction to Judaism, Second Temple literature, and a survey of Jewish culture. Additionally, candidates will have an opportunity to develop new courses that pertain to other facets of Jewish life and religion, depending on their area of expertise. The successful candidate should also demonstrate how their research and teaching provide insights into the understanding of contemporary Jewish culture and society.

A Ph.D. in Jewish Studies, Middle or Near Eastern Studies, Religious Studies, Comparative literature, or a related field is required. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. before August 1, 2025.
