What You Will Do

  • Prepare laser Direct Metal Printing (DMP) Builds for custom, patient-specific Titanium parts for our Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) product line: Review part designs provided by the Biomedical Design team and prepare them for additive manufacturing using the best orientation and supporting strategies to ensure printing success. Monitor builds through printing, post-processing, and inspection, and utilize feedback from those processes to improve future Build Prep activities. The VSP production schedule is very demanding, so the Build Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the assigned and scheduled builds are prepared and available to production each evening.
  • Prepare DMP Builds for Contract-Manufactured Titanium Medical Devices : Review the weekly schedule of planned builds and coordinate with other build preparation personnel to ensure all builds are prepared using Magics or internal preparation software at least one day in advance. Follow build preparation work instructions. Adjust builds and files to meet dynamic production plans that may change at the last minute due to customer priority or machine availability. Make files available to the production floor so machine operators can start the next build in a timely fashion.
  • Create Build Documentation : Using released traveler templates and designated label printing system, create the blank Device History Record (DHR) to be filled out by the production and quality control teams. Ensure labels match the traveler, that the build ID is correct, the machine number is accurate, and the quantities of parts prepared on the build match the quantity required to fulfill the customer PO. Follow DHR creation checklist to ensure accuracy.
  • Prepare Builds for Custom, Patient-specific Implant cases : Review design proposals from our customers and design a support structure to 3D print them on our DMP platforms. Review common implant anatomy cases and develop a strategy for supporting that can be shared with others as a best practice. Consider heat dissipation, mass, and build orientation to minimize stress and distortion using 3DXpert or other analytical tools. Evaluate failures and make changes to documented support strategy. Reduce scrap associated with support design efficiency.
  • Prepare builds for Plastics : The Littleton site also produces a variety of plastics parts for both patient-specific medical applications, as well as aerospace and other industries. The Build Engineer may be called upon to review designs and prepare build for the plastics printers. Many of these builds are also on extremely tight timelines, necessitating crisp execution by the Build Engineer.
What You Will Bring

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or related technical discipline required; or equivalent combination of educational background and work experience.
  • Extreme attention to detail, a sense of urgency, and a high level of personal accountability.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse team.
  • This position serves the Additive Manufacturing Build Team which works with export-controlled products from aerospace and defense customers.
  • This position requires an immediate start date for on-site work at our Littleton, Colorado facility. No relocation assistance is provided for this role.

Preferred Experience

  • Internship or engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing and related CAD/CAM software.
  • The ability to manipulate files and design parts in a 3D design environment like SolidWorks.
  • Experience in a regulated industry (e.g., medical device, aerospace).
