Hilltop Garden and Nature Center is a 5 acre public garden site located within the Indiana University campus. Hilltop's mission is to serve as an educational and recreational resource for youth gardening, Indiana University students and staff, and the surrounding community to learn about gardening and to connect with nature. The youth gardening programs at Hilltop provide a fun, interactive learning environment in which youth and families with children learn and work together through gardening activities.
Job Summary
Hilltop Garden and Nature Center is looking for 2 individuals to serve as Youth Gardening Program Instructors in 2025. The Youth Gardening Program Instructors will be responsible for providing horticulture and environmental science-based activities in a fun and interactive, garden-themed learning environment for youth and families to learn and work together while growing produce in their own garden plot. Educational activities will consist of outdoor garden-based learning.
Department Specific Responsibilities
Plans and leads program sessions for Hilltop's Family Gardening Program and/or Junior Master Gardener Program.
Provides a safe learning environment.
Performs general garden maintenance including seeding, planting, weeding, mulching beds and paths, pruning, harvesting, watering, fertilizing, amending and cultivating the soil, composting, pest management, removing dead plants and debris, and harvesting.
Assists with organizing and distributing tasks to program volunteers.
Assists with school field trips and summer camps at Hilltop.
Assists with Hilltop events and programs.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University junior, senior, or graduate student
Preferred
Working towards a degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, Environmental Management, Youth Development, Recreational Therapy, or Parks, Recreation, and the Outdoors
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
Experience facilitating learning experiences for children
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Preferred
First Aid/CPR certification
SKILLS
Required
Good communication and organizational skills
Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and complete repetitive gardening tasks
Ability to work independently, problem solve and make decisions quickly
A willingness and enthusiasm to help children and adults from diverse backgrounds learn basic gardening skills, with a focus on using organic and sustainable gardening methods

Additional Information
This position will require availability from March 3,2025 to October 1, 2025, for an average of 15 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours during the 4 weeks of summer camp. Successful applicants must be available 2 weekday evenings as well as on Saturdays.
