The Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine is committed to understanding the symptoms and neurobiological basis of mental illness and advancing psychiatric treatments through extensive involvement in basic and clinical research and patient care. The department is also involved with educating and training future leaders of psychiatry and behavioral science.
Founded in 2004, HANDS in Autism® serves as a global training and resource center. Since 2013, our Center has operated as an auxiliary (or small business) within the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.
HANDS works to build local capacity by helping individuals with autism and their families find ways to address their concerns and thrive in concert with any services they receive, resources needed, or settings engaged within their communities. Our focus is person-centered. We pay close attention to the individual's strengths and their needs, as well as the needs of those serving them and their families.
HANDS is well recognized beyond the sphere of autism and related disabilities. Our behavioral and educational principles and practices are relevant and useful to a wide range of individuals with a motto of "Essential for autism, beneficial for all."
We work closely with individuals and families and consult statewide and beyond with communities, schools, homes, treatment facilities, justice and first response and other settings while being integrated with medical professionals. Our immersive role has enabled us to learn how to promote successful outcomes in service delivery across these settings.
Given our hands-on work, HANDS focuses on capacity building efforts with active community and state facilitation work around areas of need, information sharing, training, dissemination and networking. Work from the bottom-up in outreach, programming and training, and top-down in facilitation, program evaluation and systems change, positions HANDS to be agile in response to needs ranging across those present in local areas, regions, statewide and beyond!
