Job Description




The Director of Chemistry Instrumentation is responsible for directing the operation, maintenance, and support of a diverse and sophisticated array of instrumentation within the Chemistry department, serving both research and academic objectives. This role also includes facilitating daily maintenance needs for faculty and staff across the department. In addition to managing the facilities, the Director is responsible for training new faculty, staff, and students on both the theoretical understanding and practical operation of instruments. Further teaching duties may be assigned at the discretion of the department chair. The Director provides expert advice to faculty to assess, upgrade, and replace instruments as needed, ensuring the department's equipment stays at the forefront of scientific innovation.



WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:



Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds and manipulate/move gas cylinders.



QUALIFICATIONS:




Knowledge, skills & ability:




  • Advanced expertise in common instrumentation used for chemical analysis (e.g., NMR, GC-MS, IR, UV-VIS, and/or fluorescence)

  • Skill in developing training programs related to all aspects of chemistry

  • Interest and ability in facilitating the implementation and adoption of newly developed, state-of-the-art analyses

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Desire and ability to contribute to a collaborative environment

  • Dedication to carrying out their work to enhance the institutional goal of inclusive excellence.






Education & experience:




  • PhD strongly preferred, but a Master's degree and experience directing an instrumentation facility required.

  • Demonstrated record of professional experience with chemistry instrumentation (including sample preparation and quantitative analyses), preferably in a multi-user facility environment

  • Demonstrated record of professional experience working with undergraduate or trainee scientists in a research environment

  • Demonstrated record of professional experience with use of instrumentation techniques in a classroom/undergraduate teaching environment

  • Demonstrated record of professional experience in grant writing to support multi-user instrumentation as well as research program






SALARY STRUCTURE:




Pay Grade 9 Salaried Exempt ($74,672 to $110,000 annually)




Work Schedule:




Monday through Friday, 38.75 hours per week
